“Anna Keast-Butler, the director of British intelligence agency GCHQ, cited new intelligence indicating that Russian war deaths had likely reached almost half a million; various Western sources put total Russian casualties at significantly more than 1 million.”

Read that again. Half a million dead. More than a million casualties total.

It gets worse. Frankopan writes: “Russia is now incurring eight men killed or seriously wounded for every one lost by Ukraine.” Eight to one. That is not a war of attrition. That is a slaughterhouse.

The results are measurable: Ukrainian drone strikes have reduced Russian oil refining capacity by 700,000 barrels per day. That is not a symbolic number. That is a structural wound.

Russia has also missed multiple operational deadlines, lost enormous quantities of military equipment, and watched its Kremlin masters demand outcomes that the battlefield cannot deliver.

The disconnect between what Putin says and what his military can actually do has become its own kind of crisis.

Russia Is Coming Apart at the Seams

The battlefield losses are catastrophic, but the damage does not stop there. Russia’s internal situation is deteriorating fast, and the Kremlin’s response has made things worse.

Military spending now accounts for half of Russia’s entire state budget. Half. That leaves precious little for the economy, for services, for the things that keep a society functional.

The result is predictable: high inflation, labor shortages, and collapsing real estate and commercial demand across the country. The Russian economy is not in recession. It is in managed collapse.

Russia is paramilitarizing its civilian institutions because it has no other tools left. The state is militarizing everything it touches.

Donald Trump’s second term has been a relentless stress test for every democratic norm the republic has built.

Federal agencies have been gutted by executive fiat. Judges who ruled against the administration face public threats. The Justice Department has been repurposed as a weapon against political opponents. Checks and balances that generations of Americans took for granted are being torn apart with deliberate efficiency.

This is not alarmism. This is the documented record of a presidency that treats the law as a suggestion reserved for other people.

What the daily drumbeat of crisis often obscures is this: we have been here before. Not metaphorically. The republic faced a genuine, democracy-devouring catastrophe once before and survived.

The president who steered the nation through that earlier collapse left behind a body of writing so precisely calibrated to our current moment that reading his words today feels less like studying history and more like opening a letter addressed directly to 2026.

That president was Abraham Lincoln. His words have never mattered more.

Lincoln Named the Threat in 1838

Abraham Lincoln was twenty-eight years old when he delivered the most prescient political warning in American history. Before the Young Men’s Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois, in January 1838, he named the internal pathology now consuming American democracy.

“I hope I am over wary; but if I am not, there is, even now, something of ill-omen, amongst us. I mean the increasing disregard for law which pervades the country; the growing disposition to substitute the wild and furious passions, in lieu of the sober judgment of Courts; and the worse than savage mobs, for the executive ministers of justice.”

Substitute “Courts” with the federal judiciary Trump has openly defied, and “savage mobs” with the crowd that stormed the Capitol and continues to threaten election officials, and Lincoln sounds less like a historical figure and more like a 2026 dateline dispatch.

His prescription was equally sweeping. Lincoln called for a national “political religion” of law:

“Let every American, every lover of liberty, every well wisher to his posterity, swear by the blood of the Revolution, never to violate in the least particular, the laws of the country; and never to tolerate their violation by others... let it become the political religion of the nation; and let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes and tongues, and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars.”

A movement that wraps itself in the flag while dismantling the legal architecture that flag represents is not patriotic. It is the monster Lincoln warned us about.

Violence Dressed as Governance

Lincoln watched similar norm-destruction in real time. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which shredded established legal boundaries in the name of “popular sovereignty,” drove him to white-hot precision.

Writing to his friend Joshua Speed in 1855, he called it what it was:

“I look upon that enactment not as a law, but as violence from the beginning. It was conceived in violence, passed in violence, is maintained in violence, and is being executed in violence.”

Lincoln grasped that the constitutional structure posed the central question every generation must answer. Addressing Congress on July 4, 1861, he asked:

“Is there, in all republics, this inherent and fatal weakness? Must a government, of necessity, be too strong for the liberties of its own people, or too weak to maintain its own existence?”

Lincoln answered with his presidency. He acknowledged that extraordinary action might sometimes be necessary to preserve the republic, but held an inviolable line:

“By general law life and limb must be protected; yet often a limb must be amputated to save a life; but a life is never wisely given to save a limb.”

The republic was worth protecting. Destroying the republic to protect the man who runs it inverts the entire bargain.

The Man Who Shapes Belief Shapes Everything

Lincoln’s sharpest diagnostic for 2026 may be his theory of public sentiment. During his 1858 debates with Senator Stephen Douglas, he declared:

“Public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it nothing can succeed. Consequently he who moulds public sentiment, goes deeper than he who enacts statutes or pronounces decisions. He makes statutes and decisions possible or impossible to be executed.”

Trump has never been a legislator. He is a sentiment-moulder, a grievance engine who grasps intuitively what Lincoln articulated carefully. The difference is that Trump uses this power to destroy the cultural consensus that makes democratic governance viable.

Lincoln’s antidote was reason. His 1842 Temperance Address closed with a vision of democratic culture at its best:

“Happy day, when, all appetites controlled, all poisons subdued, all matter subjected, mind, all conquering mind, shall live and move the monarch of the world. Glorious consummation! Hail fall of Fury! Reign of Reason, all hail!”

Lincoln also understood that conviction without pragmatism collapses. He told supporters he hoped to have God on his side, then added the line every serious coalition-builder knows: “I must have Kentucky.”

Movements that sacrifice winning majorities for ideological purity ultimately serve no one but their opponents.

When God Becomes a Partisan Weapon

The MAGA movement wraps itself in the language of divine mission. Trump’s court evangelicals have spent years proclaiming his presidency a mandate from heaven. Lincoln, who genuinely wrestled with faith and national purpose, would find that claim reckless and historically illiterate.

Writing privately after the Union’s crushing defeat at Second Bull Run in 1862, he reflected:

“The will of God prevails. In great contests each party claims to act in accordance with the will of God. Both may be, and one must be, wrong. God cannot be for and against the same thing at the same time. In the present civil war it is quite possible that God’s purpose is something different from the purpose of either party.”

He offered the same framework to Quaker leader Eliza Gurney:

“We must believe that He permits it for some wise purpose of his own, mysterious and unknown to us... Meanwhile we must work earnestly in the best light He gives us, trusting that with our limited understandings we may still do what appears to be wise and right.”

His Second Inaugural extended this humility to the public stage:

“Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other... The Almighty has His own purposes.”

Lincoln’s personal conviction was blunt:

“My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”

A movement that treats its leader as infallible has no use for that kind of accountability.

The Fiery Trial Has a Destination

History provides the map, even when surviving the journey feels impossible. Lincoln called on every American to return to the founding covenant.

His Peoria Speech of 1854 issued a challenge that still stands:

“Let us re-adopt the Declaration of Independence, and with it, the practices, and policy, which harmonize with it... We shall have so saved it, that the succeeding millions of free happy people, the world over, shall rise up, and call us blessed, to the latest generations.”

Addressing Congress in December 1862, with the war at its bloodiest and the outcome genuinely uncertain, he wrote:

“The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise, with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country... We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.”

That phrase is not rhetoric. It is a verdict history reserves for every generation asked to choose what it is made of.

Lincoln’s First Inaugural, delivered to a country fracturing before his eyes in March 1861, ended not with a threat but with a plea:

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.

The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

When the war ended, Lincoln did not call for retribution. His Second Inaugural charted a different path:

“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds.”

That is the roadmap. Not painless. Not easy. But survivable. The republic Lincoln saved was cracked, bloodied, and exhausted. It held.

Eighteen months into a second term that has assaulted every democratic institution the founders built, Americans who are frightened and furious should hold onto this: Lincoln’s generation faced something far worse, asked the harder question, and chose to answer it right.

That choice belongs to us now.

1. The Aesthetics of the “Drag Queen You Can Vote For”

While traditional American leaders have historically projected their masculinity through unadorned, stoic, and rugged physical presentation, Trump’s daily self-fashioning relies heavily on highly stylized, artificial, and historically feminized beauty routines.

• For Gay Supporters: Prominent pro-Trump gay figures and groups (such as Gays for Trump) actively recognize and celebrate this aesthetic, affectionately labeling him “the drag queen you can vote for.”
  
  They find his theatricality, “cattiness,” and dramatic flair reminiscent of iconic gay performance traditions - a playful, rebellious spirit they feel has been drained from mainstream, polite politics.

• For Cis-Hetero Supporters: The broader public and his straight base generally do not interpret his orange makeup, elaborate hair, or effeminate hand gestures through the lens of gender non-conformity.

Zero. That is the number of self-identified communists currently serving in the United States Congress. Not one.

The timestamp says everything: 2:40 in the morning on June 23, 2026, and the President of the United States was posting a 400-word manifesto on Truth Social. “America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!” he wrote.

Days later, speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, he ramped up the rhetoric:

“The communists recently elected in New York City are not social democrats but godless die-hard communists. They are the most serious threat our nation has faced in its 250-year history.”

He warned the audience that a progressive government would “close your churches” and “kill your people.”

The trigger? Progressive candidates backed by New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani had won Democratic primaries. Some identified as democratic socialists. None called themselves communists.

This is the trap. Documented, catastrophic failure rate. The last man who ran this play died politically destroyed, ostracized, and broken at 48 years old.

Trump is 80, and he is running the identical script, borrowed from a man who borrowed it from the senator it obliterated.

Accountability Has Already Begun. Here Is What It Looks Like.

McCarthy reportedly chose communism as his topic over housing policy only after arriving in West Virginia and consulting with local hosts. The speech that launched four years of national hysteria was improvised plagiarism.

None of that stopped it from working, briefly. McCarthy took the stage and declared:

“Today we are engaged in a final, all-out battle between communistic atheism and Christianity. The modern champions of communism have selected this as the time, and ladies and gentlemen, the chips are down — they are truly down.”

He went further. “The reason why we find ourselves in a position of impotency,” he told the crowd, “is not because our only powerful, potential enemy has sent men to invade our shores, but rather because of the traitorous actions of those who have been treated so well by this nation.”

He claimed to hold “a list of 205” card-carrying communists inside the State Department. That list was never produced.

Now read Trump at the Faith & Freedom Coalition, June 2026:

“These are not social Dumocrats, these are hard core, godless Communists... They will close your Churches, they will kill your people. This is what they’re about. This is the Greatest Threat to our Country since its Founding 250 years ago!”

Set them side by side long enough and you start to wonder if Trump had the McCarthy speech open in another tab. The scripts are not similar. They are the same script.

A Trick With No Rabbit Left in It

McCarthy’s Red Scare had one structural advantage Trump simply does not possess: a real adversary.

The Soviet Union existed. The Cold War was active. Soviet atomic capability had been confirmed in 1949. China had just fallen to Mao. Genuine national anxiety gave McCarthy something real to exploit, even as his specific claims were fabricated.

Mid-century profiles in Time magazine described McCarthy as “a man of furious energy, always in a hurry, with little general curiosity,” combined with “a willingness to boldly lie and escalate conflicts rather than back down.”

That reads like an unedited Trump biography.

Trump has none of McCarthy’s structural cover. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. Communism has been absent from mainstream American political discourse for over thirty years.

Trump’s audiences can confirm in a single search that none of the candidates he has attacked identify as communists.

Decency, Censure, and the Breaking Point

McCarthy’s collapse came in a single televised moment, but that moment was the product of years of accumulated exposure.

Thirty-six days of Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954 had already battered his credibility when he launched a baseless attack on a young attorney with no communist connections.

Army counsel Joseph Welch stopped the proceedings entirely. His response ended McCarthy’s career on national television:

“Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”

Overnight, McCarthy’s immense national popularity evaporated. The Senate voted 65 to 22 to formally censure him for conduct “contrary to senatorial traditions.” His own party abandoned him.

Eisenhower, who had tolerated McCarthy for years, quietly withdrew support the moment the political math shifted.

He Thought He Was on Offense

Donald Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC. He thought it would put the broadcaster on defense. It did the opposite.

Real accountability for January 6 has seemed permanently out of reach. The House Select Committee produced a damning report but no prosecution.

Special counsel Jack Smith indicted Trump on four federal counts tied to the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, only to see the case dissolved after Trump won back the White House and the Justice Department abandoned it.

Trump then pardoned more than 1,500 people who stormed the Capitol, erasing their records wholesale. Every avenue closed. Every door slammed.

Then Trump opened one himself.

The case began when he targeted a BBC Panorama documentary called “Trump: A Second Chance.”

The film edited excerpts from his January 6, 2021 speech at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., stitching together clips out of sequence. Trump claimed the edit falsely implied he had directly incited the violence that followed.

The BBC admitted the edit was “an error of judgment” and issued a public apology. But it refused to back down. Its lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the entire case, then launched an aggressive discovery campaign that could put January 6 itself on trial.

Trump didn’t just file a lawsuit. He handed the BBC a loaded gun.

47 Subpoenas and a Demand for the Truth

The BBC is playing offense, not defense.

The numbers are extraordinary. Trump’s legal team has been served with 126 requests for the production of documents, 152 requests for admission, and 47 separate subpoenas aimed at third parties, all filed as of June 23, 2026.

Those subpoenas seek “all documents and communications concerning the attack on the U.S. Capitol following the ‘Stop the Steal’ rally on January 6, 2021.” That language should sound familiar. It mirrors the exact categories of records Jack Smith pursued before his prosecution was killed.

The BBC also wants Trump’s personal phone logs, calendars, and daily diaries covering Election Day 2020 through Inauguration Day 2021.

They want every communication Trump had with the figures central to the January 6 story: Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Michael Flynn, and more.

Trump has produced exactly zero documents. The BBC has already turned over tens of thousands of pages.

His Own Lawyers Walked Right Into This

The irony here is almost hard to absorb. Trump filed this lawsuit. His lawyers chose to push it forward while he sits in the Oval Office. Now they are the ones complaining.

Trump’s attorney Alejandro Brito filed a formal response on June 23, accusing the BBC of trying to turn the case into “a sweeping inquiry into January 6th, post-election challenges, government investigations, congressional productions, call logs, calendars, and unrelated litigation.” He called the requests “excessive and impermissibly broad.”

But here is the legal trap. Trump’s own lawsuit placed his state of mind directly at the center of the case. The BBC’s entire defense rests on proving that what their documentary implied, that Trump knew what he was doing, was substantially true.

To build that defense, they need the records. Trump made his intent the issue the moment he filed.

Media law specialist Mark Stephens had already warned, before Trump filed a single document, that this suit would open a “Pandora’s box” of January 6 evidence.

A Florida judge in a separate case over the Pulitzer board put it plainly: he “has to follow the rules like the rest of us,” and “there’s no exemption just because he’s a president.”

Everything now hinges on one upcoming court date. U.S. District Judge Roy Altman, notably a Trump appointee, has scheduled a hearing for July 21 to decide whether the BBC’s 47 subpoenas can proceed.

A ruling in the BBC’s favor would be consequential. It would compel the release of records tied to the planning of the “Stop the Steal” rally, Trump’s private communications with his closest advisers, and material connected to every unresolved question about that day.

The defamation lawsuit would become, functionally, a January 6 accountability proceeding.

Trump is caught in a bind of his own making. Dropping the case now would look like flight from discovery. But the case is shaky on its legal foundation.

July 21 will tell us how much further the truth can travel. The pride came before the filing. The fall may come in a Miami courtroom.

The actual Donald Trump spends his days retreating.

He retreats from tariff threats he himself lobbed at trading partners like grenades, only to pull back before the shrapnel could reach his donors’ portfolios.

He retreats from his own policy positions so often that the pattern earned an unofficial name. TACO: Trump Always Chickens Out.

The cycle repeats on loop, a threat, market chaos, a quiet reversal, and then a triumphal press release claiming victory over conditions Trump himself created.

He retreats from the war he started with Iran, signing a memorandum of understanding with Tehran that reads less like a peace deal and more like an unconditional surrender.

This is the would-be strongman's endgame: launch a war of choice, absorb the chaos, then quietly hand the other side what it needs to declare victory so he can move on to his next distraction.

The myth is Superman. The reality is a man who has spent decades perfecting the art of looking powerful while quietly running away.

The TACO Economy: A Study in Capitulation

Trump entered his second term promising the most aggressive trade war in American history. Sixty percent tariffs on Chinese goods. Sweeping levies on European allies. A wall of economic nationalism that would supposedly bring manufacturing jobs flooding back to American soil.

Markets believed him, briefly. Then came the pattern.

The backpedaling started fast. Trump began issuing "pauses," "exemptions," and "reconsiderations" at a pace that left economists whiplashed.

The template became familiar quickly. A threat. Market chaos. A quiet retreat. Then a triumphal press release claiming victory over conditions Trump himself had created.

The most glaring example was a 90-day pause on tariffs for most trading partners. He framed it as strategy. Markets priced it as panic.

Investors started calling his tariff threats "negotiating theater." That is a polite way of saying the emperor keeps forgetting he has no clothes.

The man who promised to be tougher on Iran than any president in history was quietly sitting across a table, hoping Tehran wouldn't notice how hard he was blinking.

He was also hoping MAGA wouldn't grasp the uglier truth. The deal he offered Iran was far worse than Obama's.

His base, meanwhile, was sharing images of him striding toward nuclear mushroom clouds without flinching.

The Myth Requires the Lie

Here is the thing that makes all of this both amusing and genuinely alarming: neither Trump nor his most devoted supporters actually believe the myth.

The AI images exist precisely because the reality is so different. Nobody generates fantasy art of someone who already looks the part.

It is a collective agreement to look away from a man with a documented history of six corporate bankruptcies, a criminal conviction that made him the first American president sentenced as a felony criminal, and a governing record built almost entirely on threats he never follows through on.

The lies are not incidental to Trump’s brand. They are the brand. He’s reportedly made over 30,000 false or misleading statements across his political career.

His supporters do not believe the lies any more than a wrestling fan believes the chair shots are real. They simply prefer the performance to the truth.

The problem is that the rest of us live in the world his retreats and reversals are reshaping.

The lose-lose calculus sharpens every month. Trump cannot credibly threaten adversaries who have watched him retreat repeatedly. He cannot rally a base trained to ignore contradictions. He cannot rehabilitate a legacy built on myth when the myth keeps collapsing under the weight of real events.

America’s greatest loser has always been hiding in plain sight, spray-tanned and retreating, right behind the myth his followers built to replace him.

The question was whispered backstage and then asked aloud in front of a packed room at the 92nd Street Y in New York City on June 24, 2026.

MS NOW anchor Nicolle Wallace turned to documentary filmmaker and self-described “accidental historian” Ken Burns and posed what may be the defining question of this political moment: “Are we going to make it? Yes, I’m going to need your evidence-based response.”

The threat is real, Burns acknowledged. Free elections are under assault. Judicial independence is eroding. The Supreme Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act, and a Republican-controlled Congress has wholly abandoned its constitutional role in the face of authoritarian overreach.

Burns argues, that the republic has survived far worse than this. And that knowledge, he insists, changes everything.

The Historical Case for Not Despairing

Burns made his case with the precision of a closing argument. He laid out what he called America’s “three great crises” after the nation’s founding: the Civil War, the Depression, and World War II. Each one looked, to the people living through it, like the end. None of them were.

Burns explained. “We were way more divided during our Civil War, where we murdered, we now think, well over 700,000 of our own people.” The Vietnam era, from 1969 to 1975, saw “hundreds and hundreds of bombings” across the country. Burns challenged the room to name the last domestic bombing they could recall. The contrast, he suggested, speaks for itself.

Any return to the trajectory of Reconstruction’s collapse, which produced Jim Crow, mass disenfranchisement, and systematic racial terror, would be “a dark, dark place” and “a wholesale indictment of the United States.”

Burns told Wallace that the founders “would be less surprised by someone taking authoritarian power than by the abdication” of Congress. That abdication is the original and deepest failure of this moment.

Article One of the Constitution placed Congress first for a reason, and MAGA-aligned Republicans have gutted that function entirely.

The pattern of survival, though, holds. Washington lost battle after battle, including Long Island, Brandywine, Paoli, and Germantown, and the Revolution came through anyway.

Lincoln, speaking to the Young Men’s Lyceum at just 28 years old, put it plainly: “If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men, we will live through all time or die by suicide.”

“Muscular Civics:” The Work That Needs Doing Right Now

Burns does not offer hope without a homework assignment. His prescription comes in three distinct parts.

First: real civic education. “Civics is gone from the schools,” he told Wallace, “and I don’t mean 100 senators and 435 representatives and three branches of government. I mean how you get things done.”

Re-learning the actual mechanics of political action, from local races to community organizing to legislative advocacy, is not optional. This is the repair work.

Second: community. Burns pushed back hard against social media’s isolating pull: “There’s nothing social about being on your phone and everyone else in the room is on their phone doing something else.”

The same discipline that gets a person through a hard week applies to a democracy navigating an authoritarian moment. Things change. Nothing permanent is built on borrowed fear.

Burns sees momentum already forming. Young candidates are emerging in unexpected places, “really young and really complicated people” in Texas, Maine, and beyond, saying “we’re going to try something else.”

Courts are pushing back at every level. Long-time MAGA allies are beginning to notice the contradictions aloud.

Burns left no room for passive waiting.

“It’s still not enough for us to sit here on our blue island and be complacent that it’s all going to be taken care of by the mass of other people who are getting sick of him. It’s going to require everybody to do everything.”

William Faulkner wrote that “the past isn’t dead; it’s not even past.” Burns has spent his career proving that true. Now he is asking all of us to use that truth not as a comfort blanket, but as a weapon.

The Times also reported Iranian negotiators have held firm on not giving up the right to enrich uranium, which is the core dispute that war did not magically erase.

Iran stands to get sanctions relief and frozen money. Media outlets reported the deal could include relief from U.S. sanctions and $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets.

The Guardian also flagged uncertainty about whether that $24 billion gets released before or during the intended nuclear talks. Reportedly, Iran gets $12 billion on Friday or it won’t sign the memorandum.

A federal judge in Virginia halted the fund while lawsuits against Trump’s Justice Department move through the courts. That alone would have been bad enough. Then came Florida.

The federal judge who heard Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS reopened the case to investigate what she called “grievous allegations” that the settlement was “premised on deception and made the court the victim of a fraud.”

She handed down her order after a bipartisan group of 35 former federal judges argued the administration might have defrauded the court with the settlement.

Trump’s side now has to file a response to those former judges’ court filing explaining how the slush fund plan is legitimate and showing that the parties were actually adversarial, which, yes, is quite a trick when the underlying complaint is that Trump was effectively bargaining with his own government.

Retired judge Nancy Gertner put it more sharply during a Friday interview on MS Now.
