more than just feel-good stories—they represent critical victories in the broader fight to preserve global biodiversity.

As famed primatologist Jane Goodall once said, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

These successes also show that conservation is not just about saving individual species—it’s about ensuring the long-term health of ecosystems.

The recovery of species like the bald eagle, giant panda, and Amur leopard demonstrates that, with persistence, funding, and collaboration, we can protect the natural world for future generations.
<div environment—our shared planet—is under attack, and it's not just a skirmish. The GOP’s war on environmental protections has escalated into a full-blown assault with potentially devastating consequences for all of us.

The stakes couldn’t be higher, yet we’re watching as critical safeguards are dismantled one by one, clearing the path for pollution, deforestation, and unchecked corporate greed.

Let’s call it what it is: Republicans have waged a campaign to undermine nearly every environmental protection in place.

Did you breathe a little easier when the Clean Power Plan was implemented? Well, it’s been trashed.

Did you feel hopeful when rules were set to safeguard the air you breathe and the water you drink? Guess what? Those are getting shredded, too. This isn't hyperbole—it's reality.

Deregulation Isn’t Freedom—It’s Devastation

Here’s the deal: the GOP is obsessed with "deregulation," a fancy word that really means allowing industries to run roughshod over our environment with no accountability.

Trump’s administration laid the groundwork, initiating one of the most significant rollbacks of environmental protections in U.S. history.

From gutting the Endangered Species Act to scrapping Mercury and Air Toxic Standards, they’ve shown us what they really care about—and it’s certainly not the health of the planet or its people.

Now, they’re doubling down.

Have you heard about Project 2025? It includes the conservatives' not-so-secret blueprint to further eviscerate the Environmental Protection Agency.

The goal? To strip it of its powers, reduce its capacity, and render it unable to enforce any meaningful regulations.

It’s like handing the fox the keys to the henhouse and hoping for the best. Except this isn’t a henhouse—it’s the air we breathe and the water we drink.

And for what? A quick buck? Corporate profit?

Well, yes actually. And it’s no secret. The fossil fuel industry lines GOP pockets, and in return, they get regulatory loopholes big enough to drive an oil tanker through.

Climate Change: Denial Reigns Supreme

Perhaps the most infuriating aspect of this environmental war is the denial.

Despite overwhelming scientific consensus and increasingly catastrophic natural disasters, a large swath of the GOP still refuses to acknowledge climate change’s reality, let alone address it —- proving the adage “Money Talks, Bullshit Walks!”

They brush off wildfires, heatwaves, floods, and hurricanes as "just the weather." What more will it take? Would a biblical plague of locusts get their attention? Not that “bought and paid for” conservative lawmakers would care…

The irony is that these disasters often hit red states the hardest. Yet, there’s zero urgency from their elected officials to do anything about it.

Instead, they’re too busy cozying up to Big Oil execs, repealing emission standards, and peddling the false notion that green energy will ruin the economy.

Spoiler alert: nothing will ruin the economy faster than an uninhabitable planet.

💥 The GOP’s war on the environment is escalating—but we can push back. Every rollback, every deregulation, every dismissive remark about climate science sets us back years.

The GOP is not just asleep at the wheel; they’ve actively chosen to steer us off a cliff. Anyone who’s not furious yet isn’t paying attention! This isn’t just a political issue—it’s a survival issue.

The next election could be a turning point. It’s no longer just about "liberal vs. conservative" or "blue vs. red." It’s about life vs. catastrophe.

The climate crisis doesn’t care about party lines, but it certainly cares about policy. And so should you.

So, here’s the bottom line: if you care about the planet, your children’s future, or even just your right to breathe clean air, you need to vote.

Vote for candidates who prioritize the environment—who recognize the climate crisis as an existential threat that demands urgent action.

Get registered. activism.

This modern movement, often called the "Green Renaissance," is transforming how we perceive environmental issues by blending creativity with advocacy.

Through visual narratives that resonate deeply with audiences, artists are not only raising awareness but also inspiring action.

The Role of Artists in Climate Change Activism

Art has long been a medium for social and political expression, and the climate crisis is no exception.

Today, a new wave of artists is using their craft to speak out against environmental degradation, challenge unsustainable practices, and offer a vision of a greener future.

These artists are creating works that engage the public, provoke thought, and inspire tangible change.

One standout example is Olafur Eliasson, a Danish-Icelandic artist known for his large-scale installations.

In 2014, Eliasson's "Ice Watch" project made a powerful statement about global warming by bringing 12 massive blocks of melting Greenlandic ice to public squares in Copenhagen, London, and Paris.

As the ice melted, it gave viewers a visceral sense of the effects of climate change. By making the issue tangible, Eliasson turned an abstract problem into something people could physically experience.

His work encouraged individuals to contemplate their relationship with the environment and take steps toward climate action.

Enjoying the insights? Environmental Awareness

Visual art's ability to transcend language makes it an effective tool for raising awareness about climate change.

Murals, installations, and street art can reach diverse audiences, prompting reflection and engagement in ways traditional activism might not.

Faith XLVII, a South African street artist, is another prominent figure in this movement.

Her piece, "The Unbound," a series of murals in cities worldwide, highlights the relationship between humans and nature.

By portraying animals and plants in urban spaces, Faith XLVII draws attention to biodiversity loss and ecological destruction and encourages onlookers to consider their own role in the planet's future.
<div id="youtube2-2CFVDAzkoio" class="youtube-wrap" data-attrs="{"videoId":"2CFVDAzkoio","startTime":null,"endTime":null}" Renaissance

Beyond individual projects, entire movements have sprung up around the intersection of art and environmentalism.

The Cape Farewell project, founded by artist David Buckland, is a collective of artists, scientists, and writers collaborating on exhibitions and campaigns to combat climate change.

By bringing creatives and academics together, Cape Farewell explores how art can communicate scientific findings in ways that stir emotions and inspire activism.

Their "Art and Climate" exhibitions have traveled the world, blending art and science to tell compelling stories of climate change's impact.

In a similar vein, American artist Maya Lin is widely known for her memorials, but her environmental works are equally impactful.

Her ongoing project "What is Missing?" is a global, multi-platform initiative focused on biodiversity loss and habitat destruction.

By combining art, science, and technology, Lin raises awareness of species extinction and offers solutions for conservation.

The Intersection of Creativity and Climate Action

What makes the Green Renaissance so compelling is how it bridges the gap between creativity and activism.

As society grapples with the enormity of the climate crisis, artists are providing fresh perspectives and fostering empathy through their work.

In some cases, artists collaborate directly with environmental organizations, governments, and local communities to create art that leads to direct action.

In 2019, the United Nations Development Programme teamed up with Argentine artist Tomás Saraceno for the "Aerocene Pacha" project.

Saraceno’s balloon-like sculpture, which floated above the Salinas Grandes salt flats in Argentina, was a striking visual statement on humanity’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Powered entirely by solar energy, the sculpture demonstrated the potential of renewable energy while calling attention to the environmental degradation of the region.

This project exemplified how art can serve as both a symbol of innovation and a call for sustainability.

How You Can Support the Green Renaissance

Supporting the Green Renaissance doesn’t require an artist’s touch—anyone can contribute to the movement.

Attending exhibitions, sharing climate-themed art on social media, and supporting artists who focus on environmental issues are simple yet effective ways to participate.

Additionally, many organizations working at the intersection of art and activism offer platforms for collaboration, enabling individuals to contribute their skills and resources to the cause.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" change.

Artists like Olafur Eliasson, Faith XLVII, and Maya Lin use their platforms to create visual narratives that engage the public and inspire action.

By amplifying environmental messages through creativity, these artists are turning the tide on climate apathy and proving that art has the power to change hearts—and the planet.

As the climate crisis continues to unfold, the role of artists in shaping public discourse and inspiring action will only become more critical.

Through their work, we are reminded of the beauty and fragility of the natural world and, more importantly, the urgent need to protect it.

Unsplash

Climate change is no longer a distant threat; its effects are already being felt in communities worldwide. People everywhere face new challenges, from disappearing shorelines to more frequent heatwaves and wildfires.

While efforts to slow climate change by reducing emissions are critical, adapting to its inevitable impacts is equally essential.

This article explores concrete steps individuals, households, and communities can take to mitigate the risks and prepare for climate change's ongoing effects.

1. Assess Your Flood Risk

Rising sea levels and extreme weather events increase the risk of flooding, especially in coastal and river-adjacent areas. One of the first steps you can take is to assess your property’s flood risk.

Tools like FEMA flood maps or state-specific flood mapping systems allow you to evaluate your vulnerability.

If you live in a flood-prone zone, consider taking proactive steps such as elevating your home’s heating and cooling systems or creating barriers to divert floodwaters. Flood insurance is also a must for homeowners in these areas.

2. Retrofit Your Home

Adapting your home to climate change might seem like a significant investment, but even small changes can make a substantial difference.

Storm-proofing windows, elevating electrical systems, and reinforcing the foundation can protect your property from floods, hurricanes, and storms.

These home improvements not only safeguard your home but also reduce repair costs after a natural disaster.

Subscribe now

3. Stay Cool During Heat Waves

Heatwaves are expected to increase in frequency and intensity. To protect yourself and your family, prioritize staying hydrated and cool. Install proper insulation in your home to maintain indoor temperatures.

Utilize air conditioning or visit cooling centers during extreme heat events. You can also reduce the urban heat island effect by planting trees and using reflective materials on rooftops and pavements, which can help lower surrounding temperatures.
<div more frequent, even in regions that haven’t experienced them before.

If you live in a fire-prone area, create defensible space around your home by clearing dry vegetation, woodpiles, and debris that can fuel fires.

Keep essential items in a “go-bag,” ready for evacuation.

Air quality during fire season can be hazardous, so ensure your home has respiratory protection and air filtration systems.

5. Secure Water Resources

Due to changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity is a growing concern in many regions.

To prepare, focus on water conservation practices such as collecting rainwater, installing low-flow plumbing fixtures, and adopting efficient irrigation methods for your garden.

Growing drought-tolerant plants and xeriscaping (landscaping that reduces water use) can significantly reduce your water needs if you live in an area prone to drought.

6. Adopt Renewable Energy

Switching to renewable energy sources like solar or wind power reduces your carbon footprint and builds resilience against power outages caused by climate disasters.

Consider installing solar panels for your home or participating in community renewable energy programs if personal installation isn’t feasible.

Renewable energy helps buffer the energy grid from overload during extreme weather events and reduces the use of fossil fuels, contributing to long-term climate mitigation.

<a One way to adapt is by growing your own food in your backyard or community gardens.

Cultivating climate-resilient crops or starting a small indoor garden can provide fresh food during supply shortages.

Additionally, support local farmers who use sustainable practices, as these methods are more adaptable to climate variability.

8. Make an Emergency Plan

Preparedness is key to dealing with climate-induced disasters.

Develop a family emergency plan that includes evacuation routes, communication strategies, and supplies for at least several days of self-sufficiency.

Keep a stock of essentials like food, water, medications, and important documents in a safe, easily accessible place.

Make sure your plan accounts for everyone in your household, including pets and vulnerable family members, such as the elderly or those with medical needs.

9. Build Community Networks

Community resilience is as important as individual preparation. Get to know your neighbors and engage in local organizations to strengthen your area's social fabric.

During climate-related crises, strong social ties can make a difference in how quickly a community can recover.

Volunteer for local environmental projects, organize clean-ups or start a climate resilience group to help others in your area prepare for climate challenges.

10. Support Green Infrastructure

Advocate for green infrastructure in your community. Green spaces, wetlands, and urban forests act as natural buffers against extreme weather, absorb excess rainfall, and reduce heat islands.

Encourage local governments to invest in sustainable urban planning by creating more parks, planting trees, and protecting natural landscapes.

Green infrastructure not only mitigates climate risks but also improves overall public health.

Unsplash

In today’s world, where misinformation can spread at unprecedented speeds, the analogy of trusting medical consensus over fringe advice has become a powerful tool for climate scientists to emphasize the importance of following the science on climate change.

Just as one would trust 97 doctors advising treatment for a sick child over three dissenting opinions, we must trust the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change.

This trust, however, is often undermined by media practices and advertising that give disproportionate attention to climate change denial, creating confusion and delaying essential action.

The Role of Media: Balancing or Misinforming?

One of the most critical challenges in climate communication has been the false balance provided in many media outlets. This practice of presenting both sides—climate science and climate skepticism—on equal footing misrepresents the reality.

While 97% of climate scientists agree that human activity is the primary driver of climate change, giving deniers an equal platform creates the illusion that there is substantial debate within the scientific community.

The public, in turn, may assume that the risk of inaction is less severe than it truly is.

European countries have been proactive in addressing this issue. For example, the UK’s media regulator, Ofcom, requires broadcasters to ensure accuracy in reporting and avoid presenting misinformation as fact.

In the context of climate change, this means limiting airtime for those who deny the scientific consensus without credible evidence. By doing so, Europe has set an important standard for responsible journalism that prioritizes facts over controversy.

[Upgrade to Paid](https://www.newsletter.samuel-warde.com/subscribe)

Subscribe now

Advertising: A New Front in the Fight Against Misinformation

Beyond traditional media, advertising is crucial in shaping public perceptions of climate change. Historically, industries with a vested interest in delaying climate action have used advertising to promote doubt and confusion.

This is where Europe has made significant strides. In recent years, major advertising bodies have introduced restrictions that prohibit the promotion of "fake science" related to climate change.

For instance, the Cannes Lions, a major global advertising event, has established guidelines to prevent climate misinformation. These guidelines discourage campaigns that deny climate change or downplay its impact, aligning with international efforts to promote factual, science-based messaging.

This shift not only limits the spread of false information but also encourages businesses to align their advertising strategies with environmental responsibility, further driving societal change.

The Dangers of Delaying Action: Lessons from Science

A 2017 article from the National Institutes of Health delves deeper into the broader consequences of misinformation in scientific fields, including public health and environmental science.

The paper highlights how scientific denialism can have dangerous repercussions, from delaying policies that could save lives to fostering skepticism toward science itself. In the context of climate change, this delay has proven particularly damaging.

Climate denialists often use doubt to delay crucial action. They argue that there is still uncertainty about the causes or severity of climate change, even when the scientific consensus is overwhelming.

This is akin to delaying treatment for a sick child simply because a few doctors have an alternative opinion. Just as we would prioritize the overwhelming consensus in medical science to ensure the child’s health, we must act on climate change based on the clear evidence provided by experts.
<div Media outlets, advertisers, and even individual communicators have a responsibility to ensure that the public receives accurate, scientifically sound information.

Failure to do so not only undermines trust in science but also jeopardizes efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The scientific community has provided clear evidence that urgent action is required, yet misinformation continues to delay this action.

The false equivalence of climate change debate, particularly in the media, leads to a public perception that the issue is still open for discussion. This perception can foster apathy or, worse, inaction.

However, as Europe has demonstrated, steps can be taken to ensure that accurate information prevails, from media regulations emphasizing scientific accuracy to advertising guidelines prohibiting misinformation.

Moving Forward: Science Must Have the Last Word

In an age where misinformation is rampant, the lesson from both Europe’s proactive stance and the medical analogy is clear: science must have the last word. Climate change is not a matter of opinion; it is a fact that must be addressed with the urgency and seriousness it demands.

Media and advertising companies have the power to shape public understanding and are responsible for promoting truth rather than controversy.

By adopting practices that limit the spread of misinformation, whether through regulation or self-governance, we can help ensure that the right voices are heard.

Just as we would trust doctors' advice when faced with a medical crisis, we must trust the experts when addressing the climate crisis. The future of our planet depends on it.

In conclusion, the responsible communication of climate science is not just an academic matter; it is a pressing ethical issue that affects everyone.

From media reform to advertising integrity, ensuring that accurate information prevails will be essential in mobilizing the public and governments to act before it is too late.

Monsanto’s Covert Ties to Blackwater: Corporate Power and Private Intelligence in the Modern Era

How a an evil multinational corporation hellbent on mutating private citizens in the name of corporate profits...

Sounds a bit like a Hollywood production, doesn’t it? Maybe Jason Statham’s latest movie or a new “Fast and Furious” flick featuring Michelle Rodriguez?

If we could only be so lucky. As it turns out, this is another chapter in the ongoing controversy surrounding Monsanto, now a subsidiary of Bayer, and its multi-billion-dollar empire.

Monsanto has a long history of hiring outside contractors and private security firms to monitor and manage potential threats to its interests, including civil rights groups, activists, and individuals.

Back in 2010, Monsanto confirmed that it had enlisted the services of organizations like Blackwater—a private military company known for its involvement in controversial U.S. military operations—to provide “Monsanto’s security group with reports about activities or groups that could pose a risk to the company, its personnel, or its global operations.”

Subscribe now

Monsanto’s Empire

At its peak, Monsanto was generating billions of dollars in revenue. As of 2023, Bayer, Monsanto's parent company, reported global revenues of €50.7 billion (approximately $54 billion USD), although a portion of these earnings is from Bayer's broader pharmaceutical and agricultural businesses.

The controversies surrounding Monsanto continue to impact its public image, mainly due to the backlash from its production of genetically modified seeds and agrochemicals.

Monsanto has consistently demonstrated strong financial performance with an expected growth rate that fueled Wall Street optimism.

Today, Bayer, as Monsanto's parent company, faces a more complex financial situation, including legal battles related to Roundup, its controversial herbicide, resulting in billions of dollars in settlements.

Blackwater’s Clandestine Work

The Nation published an article in its October 4, 2010, edition, revealing how internal Blackwater documents detailed their clandestine work for multinational corporations, including Monsanto:

“[E]ntities closely linked to the private security firm Blackwater have provided intelligence, training, and security services to US and foreign governments as well as several multinational corporations, including Monsanto, Chevron, the Walt Disney Company, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and banking giants Deutsche Bank and Barclays, according to documents obtained by The Nation.”

By January 2008, a covert relationship between Blackwater subsidiary Total Intelligence Solutions (TIS) and Monsanto was solidified. [1][2][3] Cofer Black, the chair of TIS, met with Kevin Wilson, Monsanto’s Security Manager for Global Issues, in Zurich, where Monsanto reportedly agreed to pay Blackwater agents as much as $500,000 to infiltrate anti-Monsanto organizations.

This effort included gathering intelligence on activist groups and even infiltrating them "legally."

As The Nation reported:

Black wrote that Wilson "understands that we can span collection from internet, to reach out, to boots on the ground on legit basis protecting the Monsanto [brand] name.... Ahead of the curve info and insight/heads up is what he is looking for."

Black added that Total Intelligence "would develop into acting as intel arm of Monsanto." Black also noted that Monsanto was concerned about animal rights activists and that they discussed how Blackwater "could have our person(s) actually join [activist] group(s) legally."

In an email to Blackwater founder Erik Prince and other Blackwater executives, Black confirmed that TIS was to act as the "intel arm of Monsanto," tasked with protecting the corporation's brand from threats posed by animal rights activists and environmental organizations.

Share

To fully grasp the potential magnitude of this operation, one need look no further than Black, as reported by The Washington Post:

"Total Intelligence Solutions, has assembled a roster of former spooks -- high-ranking figures from agencies such as the CIA and defense intelligence -- that mirrors the slate of former military officials who run Blackwater.

Its chairman is Cofer Black, the former head of counterterrorism at CIA known for his leading role in many of the agency's more controversial programs, including the rendition and interrogation of Al-Qaeda suspects and the detention of some of them in secret prisons overseas."

Corporate Spying and Covert Operations

Covert intelligence and infiltration tactics employed by Blackwater and its subsidiaries on behalf of corporate entities represent a shift in how powerful multinationals handle dissent and manage threats to their profitability.

As RJ Hillhouse, a national security blogger, wrote in 2007, TIS provided “Fortune 500 companies” with CIA-level capabilities for gathering information and conducting covert operations.

“In the old days, a corporation had to spend millions lobbying select Senators and Congressmen and the White House to move the US intelligence apparatus to support such activities in line with its corporate interests. Now they can cut out the middle man.”

In an effort to squash this story, Monsanto issued a public statement trying to distance itself from Blackwater:

Monsanto did not hire Blackwater nor did we approve of the firm infiltrating any groups as was suggested in the Nation article. In 2008, 2009 and early 2010, a firm called Total Intelligence Solutions (TIS) provided Monsanto ’s security group with reports about activities or groups that could pose a risk to the company, its personnel or its global operations. [...]

Prior to retaining TIS, Monsanto specifically [i]nquired about and was informed that TIS was a completely separate entity from Blackwater." [emphasis added]

While technically true, their effort proved at best a poorly constructed sleight of hand as The Nation had already reported that the same entity owns both Blackwater and Total Intelligence.

Additionally, back on November 2, 2007, The Washington Post reported:

"The Prince Group, the holding company that owns Blackwater Worldwide, has been building an operation that will sniff out intelligence about natural disasters, business-friendly governments, overseas regulations and global political developments for clients in industry and government.

The operation, Total Intelligence Solutions, has assembled a roster of former spooks -- high-ranking figures from agencies such as the CIA and defense intelligence -- that mirrors the slate of former military officials who run Blackwater. [...]

Total Intelligence Solutions is one of a growing number of companies that offer intelligence services such as risk analysis to companies and governments." [emphasis added]

The DeVos-Prince Connection

Erik Prince, founder of Blackwater, comes from a family deeply tied to conservative politics. His sister, Betsy DeVos, served as the U.S. Secretary of Education from 2017 to 2021 under the Trump administration, where she was one of the most prominent figures advocating for school choice and voucher programs.

The DeVos family remains one of America's most influential and wealthy conservative families, contributing significantly to Republican political campaigns.

Salon reported that before working in the Trump administration, Prince’s sister

[M]arried into the DeVos family, one of the country’s biggest donors to Republican and conservative causes. (“I know a little something about soft money, as my family is the largest single contributor of soft money to the national Republican Party,” Betsy DeVos wrote in a 1997 Op-Ed in the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call.)

She chaired the Michigan Republican Party from 1996 to 2000 and again from 2003 to 2005, and her husband, Dick, ran as the Republican candidate for Michigan governor in 2006.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" in CIA operations emerged in the mid-2000s. Salon reported on Blackwater’s connections to prominent Republicans, noting that its founder had deep ties to right-wing Christian groups and that the firm had benefitted from lucrative government contracts.

Blackwater, now rebranded as Academi and later merged with other firms to form Constellis, continues to operate as a private security provider despite its controversial past.

Salon reported, "The ties between State and Blackwater are only part of a web of relationships that Blackwater has maintained with the Bush administration and with prominent Republicans." According to Salon,

Prince, who founded Blackwater in 1996 but reportedly took a behind-the-scenes role in the company until after 9/11, has connections to the Republican Party in his blood.

His late father, auto-parts magnate Edgar Prince, was instrumental in the creation of the Family Research Council, one of the right-wing Christian groups most influential with the George W. Bush administration.

Prince has also "been affiliated with the Council for National Policy, the secretive Christian conservative organization, whose meetings have been attended by Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Paul Bremer, and whose membership is rumored to include Jerry Falwell, Ralph Reed, and Dobson."

The Bigger Picture

This reveals that companies like Monsanto, through partnerships with private security firms like Blackwater, have access to intelligence and covert capabilities that far exceed what is typical for civilian companies.

While Monsanto's public statement in response to these revelations attempted to distance the company from Blackwater, it is clear that the lines between private security and intelligence operations are increasingly blurred.

With billions at stake and the ability to bypass traditional government oversight, private corporations like Monsanto are able to defend their interests through covert means typically associated with government espionage.

As these tactics continue, the relationship between corporate interests, security firms, and the government remains a matter of concern.

Footnotes:

[1] The Nation connected two companies, Total Intelligence Solutions (Total Intelligence) and the Terrorism Research Center (Terrorism Research), to Blackwater's owner, founder, and former Navy SEAL, Erik Prince. The Nation reported that "Prince is listed as the chairman of both companies in internal company documents, which show how the web of companies functions as a highly coordinated operation." In short, Total Intelligence and Terrorism Research are subsidiaries of Blackwater.

[2] The Washington Post reported the connection between TIS and Blackwater back in 2007 as well. significant climate events are ravaging the country while conservatives and corporate America deny the science behind the problem.

Business Insider published an article by Brett Anderson a few years ago dealing with the shrinking coastline of Louisiana that is, sadly, more relevant today than ever. That report was a shorter version of an in-depth analysis published on Matter.

As Anderson wrote:

According to the U.S.G.S., the state lost just under 1,900 square miles of land between 1932 and 2000. This is the rough equivalent of the entire state of Delaware dropping into the Gulf of Mexico, and the disappearing act has no closing date.

If nothing is done to stop the hemorrhaging, the state predicts as much as another 1,750 square miles of land  —  an area larger than Rhode Island  —  will convert to water by 2064. An area approximately the size of a football field continues to slip away every hour

"We’re sinking faster than any coast on the planet," explains Bob Marshall, a Pulitzer-winning journalist in New Orleans.

Continuing, Anderson writes that the iconic "boot" shape everyone recognizes as Louisiana "is at best an inaccurate approximation of Louisiana’s true shape and, at worst, an irresponsible lie."

However, Anderson writes, "Significant barriers — bureaucratic, political, and economic — make any 'official' alterations of the boot appear as difficult as restoring the land."

Believing that a "truer image of the state could overcome those obstacles, Anderson and Matter "pushed forward" with creating their own "alternate" map.

To accomplish this goal, Anderson obtained the assistance of Andrea Galinski, a coastal resources scientist with Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (C.P.R.A.)

Subscribe now

They "started with a map of Louisiana that includes non-walkable and non-inhabitable land," and "using publicly available data, Galinski created a map on which areas that commonly appear as land on government-issued maps—woody wetlands, emergent herbaceous wetlands, and barren land—were re-categorized to appear as water."

From that map, they "created a boot whose southern borders are drawn from where terra firma meets water."

Anderson writes that on their map, "the real map, the boot appears as if it came out on the wrong side of a battle with a lawnmower’s blades. It loses a painful chunk off its heel in Cameron and Vermilion parishes."

"Some people might criticize us for taking out the wetlands entirely, and there are places that do exist in real life — like Isle de Jean Charles — that aren’t on our boot (although they are visible, if barely, on the map we used to create the boot)," he continues, "But maps are approximations, and we believe ours errs closer to the side of truth."

The map below of Louisiana's southern coast illustrates the change, with orange areas representing land lost between 1937 and 2000.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
