Cassidy isn’t alone. Senator Thom Tillis, whom the Associated Press describes as another Republican no longer boxed in by primary fears, has already shown more willingness to cross Trump.

Tillis called for Kristi Noem’s resignation, blocked Trump’s Fed nominee Kevin Warsh, and told Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to “choose meritocracy over your mediocre yes-men.” That’s not exactly the MAGA loyalty pledge.

Then there’s Representative Thomas Massie. After losing his Kentucky primary to Trump-backed Ed Gallrein, Massie openly hinted he has seven months left in Congress and plenty of time to be a problem.

He’s got nothing to lose and every reason to make Trump’s life harder on his way out the door.

This is not a one-off. The Associated Press is already tracking what they call the GOP’s “YOLO caucus,” short for You Only Live Once.

These are Republicans who have been primaried, sidelined, or otherwise politically kneecapped by Trump’s machine, and who now feel free to do whatever they want.

Trump’s iron fist is creating defectors, not disciples. That is not a rumor. That is a pattern.

The Genius Move That Wasn’t

Trump has spent decades selling himself as a master dealmaker. The guy who wins. The guy who knows how power works. So let’s appreciate the sheer creative buffoonery of a strategy that turns your own caucus members into the opposition.

Think about it. Trump primaries a Republican. That Republican loses their future. That Republican now owes Trump absolutely nothing.

That Republican can vote however they please, talk to whoever they want, and generally become a thorn in the administration’s side for however long they have left in office.

Trump didn’t just fail to silence Cassidy. He handed Cassidy a permission slip. And Cassidy used it immediately. Tillis and Massie are now on the same path, and they’re not exactly keeping it a secret.

The Lose-Lose He Built Himself

Trump now owns a genuinely elegant trap of his own construction.

Keep primarying Republicans, and he keeps minting new members of the YOLO caucus, free agents who can block his agenda, embarrass his administration, or simply say out loud what everyone in Washington already knows.

Stop primarying them, and he loses the fear factor that has kept his caucus in line.

There is no clean exit. The YOLO caucus is small right now. It will grow. Every cycle, every primary, every revenge tour adds more names to that list.

Trump wanted a party that obeyed. He may have built a party that eventually eats him. Enjoy the earthquake, Donald. You detonated it yourself.

Republicans are trying to redraw the battlefield because they know the voters are coming. That is the story hiding behind the latest panic over gerrymandering.

Trump’s party is not behaving like a confident governing majority. It is behaving like a faction that sees the midterms approaching and looks at the economy, the Iran war, rising gas prices, Trump’s lousy approval numbers, and a fired-up opposition.

Then it reaches for the oldest trick in the anti-democratic playbook: change the rules before the people can change the government.

Virginia just gave the country the clearest example. Voters approved a Democratic-backed redistricting plan, but the Virginia Supreme Court struck it down in a 4-3 decision, turning that vote into a procedural ghost.

The ruling was a real setback. Nobody should pretend otherwise. But setbacks are not the same as defeat.

The Evidence Is Not Doom

Reuters reports that Republicans could gain up to a dozen House seats through redistricting and have already reshaped 14 districts across six states. That sounds grim until the larger picture comes into view.

Analysts still say Democrats may have the upper hand because Trump’s approval is weak, the president’s party usually loses seats in midterms, and Democrats currently lead on the generic ballot.

That matters because gerrymandering can bend representation, but it cannot repeal political gravity.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Democrats leading Republicans by six points on the generic congressional ballot, enough, at least right now, to overcome the GOP’s map advantage.

NPR’s reporting on the latest Marist poll found Democrats ahead by ten points on the congressional ballot test, with Trump at 37 percent approval and 59 percent disapproval.

Republicans may have improved the map. They have not improved the mood of the country.

Turnout Is the Bigger Monster

Gerrymandering matters. Turnout matters more.

Ipsos put it bluntly: midterms are usually not won by persuading swing voters. They are won by turning out each party’s base. Right now, Democrats appear fired up, while Republicans look less so.

Ipsos also found that Democrats and Democratic leaners are 22 points more likely than Republican counterparts to say this midterm is more important than past midterms.

NPR’s Marist analysis points in the same direction. Democrats and Harris voters are more enthusiastic than Republicans and Trump voters. Trump voters are especially weak, with only 47 percent saying they are very enthusiastic about voting.

That is the danger for MAGA. Trump can dominate Republican politics, but he is not on the ballot.

The MAGA machine still needs human beings to stand in line and vote. Trump’s name will not be there to drag them out.

Trump Is Poisoning His Own Party

Trump sold himself as the economy guy. Voters are now looking at gas prices, grocery bills, tariffs, instability, and war, then asking what exactly they bought.

The NPR/PBS News/Marist poll found that more than eight in 10 Americans say gas prices are straining their household budgets. Sixty-three percent blame Trump for the increase. Trump’s approval on the economy has fallen to 35 percent, and only 33 percent approve of his handling of Iran.

That is not a messaging problem. That is a governing failure.

Republicans cannot gerrymander away the price at the pump. They cannot redraw a district line around a family budget. They cannot tell voters that the Iran war is a triumph while voters are paying for it every time they fill the tank.

The Backlash Is Already Showing

Voters do not like being told their voices do not count.

Reuters reported that some Democrats believe the recent court rulings could mobilize voters in November. Virginia Delegate Rodney Willett, who helped pass the now-invalidated map, said constituents have flooded him with anger and frustration since the ruling.

Representative Sharice Davids, who survived a GOP-drawn map in Kansas, said politically motivated redistricting helped turn out supporters.

South Carolina Republicans seem to understand the danger, too. State Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey resisted Trump’s demand for a new map, warning that rushed redistricting could backfire.

He was even blunter about the racial politics of it, saying such a move would motivate Black turnout and create down-ballot repercussions.

That is the part Republicans keep missing. Suppression creates anger. Anger creates organization. Organization creates turnout.

Democracy Is Now on the Ballot

Democrats, liberals, and progressives do not need fairy tales right now. They need a clear-eyed reason to keep fighting.

The reason is this: the GOP’s strategy depends on voters feeling helpless. Every gerrymander, every court ruling, every attack on voting rights, every rigged map is meant to send one message. Stay home. Give up. Let the professionals steal this quietly.

That message is failing.

Special elections already show the warning signs for Republicans. Brookings found that Democrats have performed well in 2025 and 2026 special elections, with Republicans losing ground compared with their 2024 results in every congressional special election examined.

Brookings also noted that motivating Trump’s base without Trump himself may prove difficult.

That is not certainty. It is evidence. Democrats should treat it as a green light, not a lullaby.

The GOP Built a Trap for Itself

Republicans wanted a country where minority rule could survive majority anger.

They may have overplayed it. Gerrymandering can protect weak candidates in normal times. These are not normal times.

Hope means knocking doors. Hope means registering voters.

Hope means telling every young person, every Black voter, every Latino voter, every senior, every union household, every furious independent, and every exhausted former Republican that this election is not symbolic. It is operational.

Trump thought he was being clever. That is always where the trouble starts.

He is losing the suburbs at a nearly 10-to-1 ratio compared to his minor rural gains. Worse, these new voters are not “Republicans.” They are “Trump voters.” They show up when his name is on the ballot and disappear when it is not.

This is a fatal distinction for a midterm election where he is nowhere to be found. Trump’s name will never appear on a ballot again!

They have simultaneously created new majority-Latino “swing” districts, betting their entire 2026 firewall on a demographic that is, at this very moment, swinging hard against them.

The GOP is not creating a new firewall. They are lighting their own house on fire. They face the 2026 midterms with a cratering base, a “snapback” from the exact voters they bet on, and a gerrymandering scheme that has multiplied the number of seats they have to defend. This is not a realignment. This is a slaughter.

Donald Trump’s audacious plot to rig the 2026 midterm elections has stalled, possibly for good.

The president prodded Republican-led states all year to engage in an unprecedented mid-decade gerrymandering war, attempting to draw maps that would permanently entrench a GOP House majority.

Voters, however, delivered a stunning repudiation of this power grab on November 4, 2025. Democrats achieved decisive victories across the country in a wave that was stronger than the 2017 results which preceded the 2018 midterm blowout.

Democrats won convincing gubernatorial victories in New Jersey and Virginia with candidates Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger.

The party also flipped key judicial and legislative races in Pennsylvania. Most telling, Democrats won two statewide elections in the deep-red state of Georgia for the first time in two decades.

These results demolished the White House’s spin. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) dismissed the losses, claiming “blue states and blue cities voted blue,” a statement directly contradicted by the historic victories in Georgia.

The GOP’s Flawed Latino Gamble

The 2025 election exposed the fatal flaw at the heart of the entire Republican strategy. The GOP’s Texas gerrymander was built on one “questionable assumption:” that Trump’s 2024 gains with Latino voters represented a permanent political realignment.

Last Tuesday’s results prove that assumption is false. Latino voters were among the constituencies that swung hardest back to the Democratic party.

New Jersey’s results were unambiguous. The state’s three most heavily Latino counties “moved sharply back to the left.” Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill won the Latino vote by over 30 points, flipping 18% of 2024 Latino Trump voters.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was blunt: “Any progress that they’ve made with the Hispanic community — gone.”

The “Spreading Thin” Vulnerability: An Analysis of GOP Strategic Risk

The plan’s demographic failure is matched by an equally critical structural failure.

A. Madrid’s Core Warning

Beyond the Latino demographic miscalculation, the GOP’s strategy contains a second, equally fatal flaw, identified by Mike Madrid: “The problem is they’re spreading their other districts thin as they’re getting greedy.”

This is a classic gerrymandering risk. To create new R-leaning districts (e.g., R+5), map-drawers must “crack” existing safe R districts, taking Republican voters from them.

This makes the new districts functional, but it makes the old, “safe” districts (e.g., R+15) less safe (e.g., R+8). This strategy maximizes the number of seats in a “normal” political environment but maximizes the risk of a catastrophic loss in a “wave” election.

B. The 2025 “Blue Wave” as a “Stress Test”

The November 2025 election results provide a perfect “stress test” for this fragile map, demonstrating that a “blue wave” scenario is not hypothetical. The anti-GOP swing was broad, deep, and far exceeded typical political shifts.

• Virginia: Democrat Abigail Spanberger outperformed the 2021 Democratic gubernatorial candidate by a median of 13 percentage points across all counties and flipped 15 counties that her predecessor had lost.

• Pennsylvania: In Erie County, a region that “narrowly favored Trump in the 2024 election,” the Democratic candidate for county executive won by a “commanding 24-point margin.”

• Georgia: Democrats won their two statewide races with massive 17-point and 22-point margins (58 to 41% and 61 to 39%), respectively.

C. The “Cascade Failure” Scenario

These two factors - the “spreading thin” strategy and the “wave” environment - combine to create a “cascade failure” scenario for Republicans in 2026.

1. The GOP gerrymander in Texas and elsewhere creates a multitude of R+5 to R+8 districts, where R+15 districts once stood.

2. The 2025 election data demonstrates that a 13-point or even 24-point pro-Democratic swing is possible in this political environment.

3. If the 2026 midterm election mirrors the 2025 off-year environment (as 2018 mirrored 2017 ), a 10-point swing would be catastrophic for the GOP.

4. Such a swing would wipe out not only the newly created “R+5” districts (like those in Texas) but also the previously safe “R+8” districts that were “spread thin” to create them.

By “getting greedy,” the GOP’s “audacious” gerrymandering plan has inadvertently made their entire House majority more fragile, not less. It has exposed their caucus to a catastrophic cascade failure, where they could lose more seats than if they had done nothing.

This is the essence of Madrid’s warning: “None of this is good for Republicans. It’s all their own doing, though.”

California’s Prop 50 Counter-Punch

California’s voters delivered the most direct blow to Trump’s scheme. They overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50, a ballot measure championed by Governor Gavin Newsom as a direct “tit-for-tat” response to the GOP’s gerrymander in Texas.

The new measure temporarily scraps the state’s independent commission to enact a legislative map targeting five Republican-held seats. This single move effectively “cancels out” the five-seat gain Republicans thought they had secured in Texas.

Newsom nationalized the fight, casting Prop 50 as a necessary tool to “end Donald Trump’s presidency as we know it.”

The National Map Crumbles

Trump’s offensive is crumbling elsewhere from internal Republican opposition. GOP legislators in Indiana, despite intense White House pressure, defied Governor Mike Braun’s call for a special session, punting the issue to December.

Kansas Republicans announced they “lacked support” for a special session to draw out the state’s lone Democrat. The GOP’s new map in Missouri, designed to add one seat, is now hostage to a citizen-led referendum that is “increasingly likely” to suspend it.

Democrats, meanwhile, are pressing their new advantage. The “blue wave” in Virginia gave them a full trifecta and their largest state House majority since 1989, “unlocking” their ability to draw two or three new Democratic seats.

The Democratic counter-offensive has fractured in other states. Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson is openly resisting a push from Jeffries to gerrymander out the state’s lone Republican, arguing Democrats “don’t need to rig the system to win.”

His stance earned a blistering public rebuke from Virginia State Senate President L. Louise Lucas: “Grow a pair and stand up to this President.”

A Mandate for Democracy

The 2025 election results provided a clear path forward for Democrats. The “blue wave” was not just a victory, but a mandate from voters who rejected Trump’s cynical plot to rig the 2026 election.

The GOP’s complex scheme, from Texas to Indiana, is now in tatters, collapsing under the weight of its own flawed assumptions and internal party opposition.

The election proved what some, like GOP strategist Mike Madrid, have argued all along: Democrats can “win elections at the ballot box without sacrificing the moral high ground.”

While Trump and his allies remain “full-steam ahead” on their failing strategy, Democrats are now the favorites to take back the House in 2026.

Minority Leader Jeffries summarized the new reality: “Republicans woke up this morning and realized that they are no longer in a 2024 electoral environment. That’s over.”

In the wake of recent elections, a crisis of confidence is brewing within the Democratic Party.

Despite high voter turnout, key losses have created a leadership vacuum and a sense of strategic drift, leaving many to ask a difficult question: Is the party’s current leadership equipped for today’s political battles?

For a growing portion of the base, the answer is a resounding no. The party is at an inflection point, caught between an institutionalist leadership seen as passive and a base that craves a more confrontational approach.

The Leadership Deficit

The frustration is aimed squarely at the top. While House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have formidable legislative records, their leadership styles are increasingly viewed as a liability.

The core critique is not about policy, but a perceived lack of fight - a preference for the norms of a bygone era over the aggressive tactics needed to confront the modern Republican Party.

Hakeem Jeffries’ rise to House Democratic Leader was historic, marking a generational shift. He has been a party loyalist, voting with President Biden’s stated position 100% of the time during the 117th Congress.

However, the party’s progressive wing views him not as an ally but as an “adversary.” Jeffries has drawn a clear line, stating, “There will never be a moment where I bend the knee to hard-left democratic socialism.”

He backed this up by co-founding the Team Blue PAC to protect incumbents from progressive primary challengers, a move seen as a direct assault on the party’s activist base.

During the recent government shutdown, while Jeffries was a vocal presence in the media, he struggled to command the narrative, with Republicans and Donald Trump focusing their attacks on Chuck Schumer, effectively erasing Jeffries from the conflict.

Chuck Schumer, for his part, was an incredibly effective legislative tactician as Senate Majority Leader, passing landmark bills like the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 in a 50-50 Senate.

Yet, this success is overshadowed by his public perception. His approval ratings are deeply negative, with his favorability among Democrats plummeting from 47% in May 2024 to just 35% by September 2025.

Critics deride his reliance on formal “Dear Colleague” letters as the political equivalent of bringing a strongly worded letter to a knife fight.

This perception was cemented during the shutdown when his remark that “every day gets better for us” was seized upon by Republicans as evidence that he was callously celebrating the crisis for partisan gain.

The problem isn’t legislative failure; it’s a clash of philosophies. Jeffries and Schumer are institutionalists who believe in norms and negotiation.

But a growing part of the base sees the GOP as a bad-faith actor dedicated to dismantling the system. From this perspective, adhering to old traditions isn’t just ineffective - it’s dangerously naive.

The Next Guard in Congress

As dissatisfaction with the old guard intensifies, a bench of potential successors is emerging. In the House, figures like Rep. Katherine Clark and Rep. Pete Aguilar represents continuity with the current leadership’s ideology.

A more significant shift would be represented by a leader from the Congressional Progressive Caucus, like its chair, Rep. Pramila Jayapal.

Perhaps the most intriguing figure is Rep. Ro Khanna of California. A progressive who co-chaired Bernie Sanders’ 2020 campaign, Khanna is trying to appeal beyond the activist left with a call for a “new economic patriotism” focused on re-industrializing America.

He is also a voice of internal dissent, urging the party to “break free from a stale, conventional platform” and to stop the culture of “lecturing people” that alienates potential supporters.

In the Senate, a new generation is defined by their electoral success in tough states. The “battleground champions” offer a potential blueprint for the party.

Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia has won multiple high-stakes races with a message of moral authority rooted in his background as a pastor.

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, a former astronaut, has won by cultivating a moderate, independent image. Another model is the “media-savvy fighter,” like Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who has become a leading and aggressive voice on gun control.

However, the path for any successor is blocked by the powerful forces of institutional inertia and the seniority system, which protect the old guard.

The Cracks in the Coalition

This leadership crisis is a symptom of deeper, structural fissures within the party. A profound generational and ideological chasm has opened up, and one of the party’s core electoral theories has collapsed.

Younger Democrats are significantly more liberal, diverse, and secular than their older counterparts. This divide is stark on foreign policy, where liberal Democrats (who are disproportionately young) are more than twice as likely as moderates to say the U.S. supports Israel too much (69% vs. 29%).

The sentiment is unambiguous: a staggering 74% of Gen Z Democrats agree that the country’s big problems can’t be solved until the older generation no longer holds power.

For decades, Democratic strategy was built on a simple axiom: “When Democrats vote, Democrats win.”

The logic was that high turnout would mobilize the party’s diverse, young, and lower-income base and overwhelm the GOP. The 2024 election demolished this theory. Turnout was a robust 64%, yet Democrats lost critical ground.

The data tells the story:

• Voters who sat out 2020 but voted in 2024 favored Donald Trump by a 54% to 42% margin. The very people the turnout model was supposed to capture abandoned the party.
  

• The pool of nonvoters is no longer a Democratic firewall. By 2024, eligible nonvoters were nearly evenly split, with 44% favoring Trump and 40% for Harris.

The party can no longer assume that demographics or high turnout guarantee victory. It must shift from a strategy of mobilization to one of persuasion, actively competing for voters it once took for granted.

The 2028 Gauntlet: Choosing a Strategy, Not Just a Leader

The emerging 2028 presidential field represents a clash of competing theories for the party’s future. The choice is less about one individual and more about a grand strategy.

1. The “Nationalize and Polarize” Strategy: Embodied by California Governor Gavin Newsom, this approach leans into the culture wars to energize the base. Newsom has positioned himself as a fighter, eagerly taking on Republican governors.
   
   This appeals to Democrats hungry for a champion, but his “California baggage” and unpopularity with independents are significant liabilities.
   

2. The “Win the Center” Strategy: Represented by governors like Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, this path argues victory runs through the Rust Belt with a pragmatic focus on kitchen-table issues. Both are proven winners in crucial swing states.
   
   Whitmer’s brand is “Fix the Damn Roads,” while Shapiro earned a reputation for competence with the rapid reconstruction of a collapsed interstate. The risk is that their pragmatism may fail to excite the national base in a contested primary.
   

3. The “Ideological Realignment” Strategy: Figures like Rep. Ro Khanna and Governor Jared Polis seek to build a new coalition by breaking with party orthodoxy on economic or civil liberties issues.
   
   Khanna, for instance, calls for a “new economic patriotism” to re-industrialize America and win back working-class voters.

This presents primary voters with an “authenticity trap.” The base craves a fighter like Newsom, who best channels their anger.

Yet, the candidates with the strongest general election profiles appear to be the swing-state pragmatists like Whitmer and Shapiro.

The 2028 primary will be a referendum on what the party values more: ideological purity and fighting spirit, or pragmatic electability.

The answer will determine whether Democrats can forge a path from protest to power.

While a special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation during Trump’s first term did not find evidence that he was formally recruited by Russia's security services, it did uncover "extensive criminal activity" by him and his associates.

The question of his role as a Russian asset endures, because to focus solely on recruitment is to misunderstand the subtle art of modern espionage.

When viewed through the lens of intelligence tradecraft, the evidence overwhelmingly suggests that Donald Trump, whether wittingly or not, functions as one of the most effective assets in the history of the Russian Federation.

The Spy's Lexicon: Understanding the "Asset"

To grapple with this reality, one must first understand the critical distinction between an "agent" and an "asset.”

An agent is a willing spy who has formally signed on with a foreign intelligence agency, is given specific tasks, and is often paid for their services.

An asset, however, is a much broader and more versatile tool. An asset can be anyone who serves a use to a foreign power, from a high-level source to a casual acquaintance.

Crucially, many assets do not even know they are being used. They are sometimes called "dupes" or "useful idiots," whose own motivations—greed, ego, or ideology—can be manipulated to benefit a foreign government without conscious intent to commit treason.

As one former KGB major explained, it is often better to let assets operate in "blissful ignorance.” This provides plausible deniability while achieving strategic goals with minimal risk.

Decades of Cultivation: The Long Game

According to veteran journalist Craig Unger, the narrative of Trump’s cultivation begins over four decades ago.

Unger’s reporting relies heavily on the testimony of his key source, former KGB major Yuri Shvets, who provided a detailed account of how Russian intelligence allegedly targeted Trump.

Per Shvets, the cultivation began in earnest in the 1980s.

• The First Contact: The KGB allegedly made its first move after Trump purchased television sets for his Grand Hyatt Hotel from a store that Shvets identifies as a KGB front. A co-owner reportedly acted as a "spotter agent," identifying the ambitious developer as a potential asset.

• The 1987 Moscow Trip: This led to Trump's first visit to Moscow in 1987, a trip Shvets claims was orchestrated by the KGB. During this visit, Trump was allegedly "groomed" by officers who found him "extremely vulnerable intellectually and psychologically" and highly "prone to flattery.”

• The Payoff: Upon his return, Trump took out a full-page ad in major newspapers assailing America's alliance with NATO. Shvets recalled that a cable arrived at KGB headquarters celebrating the ad as a successful "active measure" executed by their new asset.

A Trail of Compromise: Money, Motive, and the Mafia

An intelligence asset can be cultivated through ego, but they can also be controlled through financial leverage. After a series of bankruptcies, Trump’s access to traditional lending dried up, creating a need for capital that Russian sources were seemingly eager to provide.

In a candid moment in 2013, Eric Trump reportedly revealed the family’s financial strategy to golf writer James Dodson.

When Dodson asked who was funding their golf course acquisitions during the post-recession credit crunch, Eric replied, "Well, we don't rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia".

This reliance was echoed by Donald Trump Jr., who stated at a 2008 real estate conference that "Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets.”

Perhaps the most glaring example of this is the 2008 sale of a Palm Beach mansion, "Maison de l'Amitié,” to Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev for $95 million—a property Trump had purchased for just $41 million a few years earlier.

The massively inflated price for a house Rybolovlev never lived in and planned to demolish has been widely viewed as a suspicious influx of Russian cash at a time Trump needed it most.

This was not an isolated financial dealing with questionable Russian figures. According to journalist Craig Unger, Trump’s properties have a long history of association with Russian organized crime.

In 1984, a man named David Bogatin, identified in FBI files as a member of the Russian mafia, bought five condos in Trump Tower for $6 million.

Unger reports this was the beginning of a pattern, claiming to have found 13 individuals with ties to the Russian mafia who lived in or owned property in Trump buildings, suggesting Trump was "hosting the Russian mafia for many years before he even ran for president.”

These long-standing financial entanglements created clear avenues for potential compromise.

An Asset in the White House: The Objective Results

Whether one believes the detailed accounts of his cultivation or the implications of his financial dealings, Trump's actions in office align perfectly with the goals of an asset.

As Edward Lucas of the Center for European Policy Analysis writes, "Regardless of why, he's acting exactly like a Russian asset would.” The results speak for themselves:

• Undermining Alliances: Trump has consistently worked to divide the United States from its allies, disparaged the leaders of the closest partner nations, and promoted their far-right, anti-American rivals.

• Siding with Putin: At the 2018 Helsinki summit, Trump famously stood next to Vladimir Putin and sided with the Russian dictator over America's own intelligence agencies.

• Abandoning Ukraine: He has tipped the scales in Russia's favor by cutting off aid and intelligence support to Ukraine and publicly berating President Volodymyr Zelensky.

His behavior is so consistently beneficial to Moscow that Portuguese President Rebelo de Sousa stated that Trump's leadership "has strategically favored the Russian Federation.”

"They don't want to work with you. They're not going to work with you," he declared. "They have the House, the Senate, and the White House. Let them choke on that."

Today, we're focusing on the 9/11 first responders — the firefighters, police officers, and civilians who risked everything on one of the darkest days in American history.

These heroes are now being told there’s no money for the health care they desperately need.

This is not just a heartbreaking story. It’s infuriating. And, as liberals, we warned voters this would happen.

What Happened

Republican Rep. Anthony D’Esposito of Long Island had been working on a bipartisan bill to fully fund the World Trade Center Health Program through 2040.

This program, originally created in 2011 under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, provides life-saving care to over 130,000 first responders and survivors, with over 7,000 new enrollees just this year.

The measure was supposed to be a bipartisan victory — a rare moment of unity in Congress. But then it all fell apart.

D’Esposito himself said, “It’s not a partisan issue. This is an American issue.”

However, House Speaker Mike Johnson, backed by Donald Trump and Elon Musk, stripped the funding from the spending bill to appease their concerns over “government waste” and the debt ceiling.

This decision came just days before a government shutdown deadline.

The GOP-led House abandoned a bipartisan plan to keep the government open after Musk demanded the bill fail on his social media platform, X, and Trump followed suit.

Johnson, desperate to avoid upsetting these MAGA power players, “essentially ripped up the deal,” according to reporting from the Seattle Times.

The Fallout

On Wednesday, D’Esposito had been celebrating the bill’s inclusion in the spending plan, but by Thursday night, it was gone.

D’Esposito claimed he had no choice but to vote for the stripped-down spending bill to avoid a government shutdown, saying,

If there was [sic] projects and funding that was put into that bill and 9/11 was the only thing that was eliminated, I absolutely would have voted against.

It’s paramount that we keep the government open. I don’t think this nation can stand a government shutdown over the next few weeks.

Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman didn’t buy D’Esposito’s excuses. He said,

When he says he had no choice, that basically means that he has no power within his own party that controls the House to get anything done.”

Goldman also pointed out

It’s baffling to me that the excuse would be, ‘We can’t shut down the government,’ when it was part of the original deal that would have avoided a government shutdown.

The decision to withhold funding sparked outrage not just in Congress but also among the very first responders the bill was meant to protect.

The First Responders Speak Out

Standing outside a firehouse near the World Trade Center in freezing temperatures, firefighter unions expressed their anger at Congress for abandoning 9/11 heroes.

James Brosi, president of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, said

The one thing we were able to fall back on was people wouldn’t forget and they would always stand beside us. Unfortunately twenty-some-odd-years later, people are starting to forget.

It is unimaginable that we would have to come down here and ask Congress to do the right thing.

Andrew Ansbro, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, echoed the frustration.

He said,

Part of what was left on the table was the bill that would provide the health care and the compensation for the sick and dying New York City firefighters, police officers, and first responders and civilians that were affected by what happened down there.

Ansbro also criticized the MAGA slogan directly, saying,

The incoming politicians and those returning were given a mandate to make America great again. We know that you cannot make America great again if you leave behind those that are sick and those that are dying that answered the call on 9/11.

But, despite their anger, the first responders remain determined to fight.

Ansbro added, “We’re not here to point a finger at anyone for what happened that day. We’re here to let everyone know that we’re not going away.”

The World Trade Center Health Program was designed to ensure that no first responder would ever be turned away from the care they need. Yet here we are, 23 years after 9/11, with firefighters, police officers, and civilians still begging for basic health care.

As Brosi put it, “It is unthinkable at 23 years later that we should all be here on a 17-degree day standing outside this memorial begging for the funding to recognize the people who did the work.”

“Johnson negotiated w/ Democrats to keep the government open, then went back on his word…because, apparently, out of touch billionaire Elon Musk now calls the shots. At least we know who’s in charge. Grow a spine, Mr. Speaker!”
