She handed down her order after a bipartisan group of 35 former federal judges argued the administration might have defrauded the court with the settlement.

Trump’s side now has to file a response to those former judges’ court filing explaining how the slush fund plan is legitimate and showing that the parties were actually adversarial, which, yes, is quite a trick when the underlying complaint is that Trump was effectively bargaining with his own government.

Since January 2025, Trump has issued executive orders targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across the federal government. He has pushed to erase what he calls “divisive, race-centered ideology” from schools, museums, and the Smithsonian Institution, seeking to rewrite history on his terms.

These actions serve a clear purpose: to police who belongs in American civic life and who gets to shape its memory. Combined with aggressive redistricting and voting rights rollbacks, Trump’s agenda aims to narrow the electorate and entrench minority rule under a veneer of legality.

This power grab marks a blunt, unapologetic return to tactics that have shaped U.S. politics since before the Civil War.

Trumpism openly revives the backlash against democratic expansions that extended citizenship and voting rights to Black men after Reconstruction and later to women.

His approach exposes the underlying strategy: use law, fear, and historical myth to maintain white male dominance whenever democracy threatens to broaden.

History has seen this trick before

The roots of Trump’s agenda trace back to the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. After slavery’s abolition, the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments rewrote the constitutional order by granting birthright citizenship, equal protection under the law, and voting rights to Black men.

Southern states briefly saw multiracial governments and sweeping reforms that enshrined public education and labor rights.

This democratic expansion provoked a violent backlash known as Redemption.

White Southern Democrats, calling themselves Redeemers, used paramilitary terror groups like the Ku Klux Klan and Red Shirts to assassinate Black politicians and overthrow multiracial governments, as seen in the 1898 Wilmington coup.

They dismantled Reconstruction’s gains through poll taxes, literacy tests, and white primaries designed to suppress Black voters without explicitly violating the Fifteenth Amendment.

By 1910, Black political power in the South was all but erased, locking in a white male minority rule system known as the Solid South.

This cycle repeated itself in the twentieth century. The Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954 shattered legal segregation, inspiring the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

These laws began dismantling Jim Crow’s legal barriers, registering hundreds of thousands of Black voters and challenging entrenched discrimination.

Yet the backlash morphed. The Southern Strategy of Nixon and Reagan repackaged white supremacy in coded language like “law and order” and “states’ rights,” appealing to racial resentment while avoiding outright racism.

Trumpism discards subtlety, embracing overt xenophobia, anti-immigrant rhetoric, and direct attacks on voting rights and historical memory.

White male minority rule never stayed secure

Despite decades of entrenched white male dominance, history reveals it never secured permanent legitimacy. Each wave of exclusion was eventually broken by coalition politics, mass organizing, and federal enforcement of constitutional rights.

The Nineteenth Amendment, which guaranteed women’s suffrage, closed the constitutional gap left by Reconstruction’s focus on “male inhabitants.”

The current wave of suppressive policies is not a sign of strength but a desperate attempt to cling to power.

Trumpism needs minority rule because it cannot win fairly

Trump’s 2025 orders targeting diversity and inclusion programs are part of a calculated effort to narrow who counts as fully American.

His administration’s revival of the 1776 Commission and the “patriotic education” agenda seeks to rewrite history, erasing uncomfortable truths about slavery, systemic racism, and gender inequality.

This memory control is a cornerstone of his minority-rule project.

The Supreme Court’s April 2026 Louisiana v. Callais decision further undermined voting rights protections by striking down majority-Black districts as unconstitutional racial gerrymanders.

This ruling opened the door for rapid redistricting efforts aimed at diluting minority electoral power, with Republican legislatures in Tennessee, Texas, and Florida redrawing maps to consolidate partisan advantage.

Yet courts in Alabama and South Carolina have blocked some discriminatory maps, showing resistance is still possible.

How to defeat it now

History offers a clear blueprint for defeating Trump’s bigoted power grab. Backlash movements have failed when opponents refuse to build broad coalitions rooted in moral clarity and shared democratic stakes.

Fusion politics - coalitions uniting multiracial voters, working-class people, women, and youth around common economic and social goals - have repeatedly broken exclusionary regimes.

Progressives must treat attacks on schools, museums, and history not as cultural side battles but as central fights for democracy. Supporting voting rights and election protection work at the local level is critical, as minority-rule politics almost always begins by shrinking the electorate.

Litigation and state-level resistance to unlawful maps and funding cuts can impose costs and delays on suppressive projects.

Refusing divide-and-conquer tactics that isolate vulnerable groups is essential. An attack on one group’s civic standing is an attack on everyone’s.

Clear, plain language from politicians and media must name Trumpism as a minority-rule project, not just another political divide.

Joining or funding local organizations that protect voting rights, support inclusive education, and promote truthful history will build the relational power needed to sustain democratic accountability.

Trump’s agenda can be beaten because past exclusionary regimes were broken through coalition, law, organizing, and an uncompromising defense of equality and truth.

POLITICO’s recent reporting notes that the nine-page agreement released Monday did not mention any resolution of Trump’s tax disputes.

The one-page document posted later included a sweeping release that “forever barred and precluded” examinations of Trump, related individuals, trusts, and businesses involving tax returns filed before the effective date.

Blanche signed it, but it did not carry the signature of an IRS representative or Trump’s lawyers.

Public Citizen warned that any implementation of a settlement requiring audit termination would put innocent IRS officers and employees at legal risk if they failed to report the prohibited request to the Treasury Inspector General.

Trump’s scheme does not just endanger taxpayers. It potentially drags civil servants into his legal sewer. That is the Trump model: he makes the mess, someone else gets the mop, and everyone around him gets closer to indictment fumes.

This Is Built to Lose

Lawsuits are not just likely. They are the whole next chapter. The slush fund has no congressional backbone. The judge said there is no settlement of record. The audit addendum appears to run headfirst into a federal statute designed to stop presidents from meddling in IRS audits.

Former IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said he was unaware of any precedent where the IRS agreed in advance to permanently forgo examination of previously filed returns for a specific person or business. Former IRS Commissioner John Koskinen called the expanded settlement a “terrible precedent” and said not auditing Trump’s returns would effectively give him money from the government.

Trump wanted a legal escape hatch. He may have built a courtroom piñata.

The Getaway Plan Has a Problem

Trump’s fake settlement is not the end of this scandal. It is the exhibit table. The one-page addendum is the document investigators, watchdogs, and judges should read first.

The slush fund was the shiny object. The audit wipeout is the smoking gun. Trump’s crew tried to dress the whole thing up as a settlement, but the judge already stripped away that costume. No settlement of record means no judicial blessing, no normal closure, and no magic shield.

Trump wanted a triumphant Iran war, the kind of chest-puffing spectacle his movement could sell as genius, strength, and maybe even Nobel Peace Prize bait if the lighting was right.

Instead, distinguished professor and defense and security analyst Michael Clarke’s analysis suggests Trump may end up staggering back toward the same basic nuclear framework he and the MAGA chorus spent years trashing because Barack Obama had his name near it.

That is the humiliation hiding beneath the smoke. Trump does not just hate Obama’s policies. He hates Obama’s stature, Obama’s calm, Obama’s global respect, and Obama’s Nobel Prize.

Respect is the one thing Trump cannot buy, bully, litigate, or slap his name on in gold letters.

Now Clarke says the best America may hope for is something that looks a lot like the former president’s 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Clarke’s Evidence Is Brutal

Professor Clarke discussed the Iran war with host Kamali Melbourne during a recent question-and-answer session hosted by Sky News.

Clarke is not some random cable screamer filling airtime. He’s a visiting professor at King’s College London and the University of Exeter, a former Director-General of the Royal United Services Institute, and a long-standing analyst of defense, security, and geopolitics.

Clarke’s verdict on Trump’s war was devastating because it was so plain. Asked what the Americans had achieved, he said “the best you can expect now” is a return to “something that looks like the 2015 deal” on Iran’s nuclear program.

He added that such a deal would be “a restraint but not an end” to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and that “probably nothing will be achieved” on Iranian ballistic missiles or Tehran’s support for regional proxies.

That is not victory. That is Obama’s old homework with blood on it.

MAGA Strength Met Reality

Trump has spent years selling the fantasy that foreign policy is just bullying with better branding. Threaten harder. Insult louder. Bomb faster. Declare victory before anyone checks the map.

Clarke said the war came at “enormous cost to the 90 million people of Iran,” but what it achieved inside Iran was “the consolidation of a military,” meaning the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

He described the result as no longer simply a theocratic dictatorship, but “a military dictatorship with trappings of theocracy.”

That is a catastrophic outcome for anyone pretending this war was about weakening the regime. The Iranian people suffer. The IRGC digs in. Trump gets to pose for cameras. MAGA gets its dopamine hit. Then the strategic ledger comes due.

Clarke summed up Iran’s achievement in one word: survival. Authoritarian regimes do not need love. They do not need legitimacy in any democratic sense. They need to outlast the attack and tell their supporters they endured America’s fury.

The Decapitation Fantasy Failed

Clarke explained the military logic in stark terms. A country at war tries to attack the enemy’s “political center of gravity.” The bombing campaign targeted the IRGC, its bases, and Iran’s power structure in an attempt to decapitate the regime.

China Can Smell the Blunder

Clarke also described how China may view the conflict. He said Chinese leaders see what America is doing as “a huge strategic blunder,” adding the logic: “Never disturb your opponent while he’s making a mistake.”

That should sting. Trump wants to look dominant heading into global showdowns, but Clarke said he went to China with the war “hanging around his neck like a millstone.” He also said Trump was in a weaker position because of the war and had “miscalculate[d] the strategic” pros and cons.

Trump craves respect from the world’s strongmen almost as much as he craves revenge against Obama. Clarke’s analysis suggests he may get neither. Xi can watch. Iran can wait. Allies can de-risk. Trump can rant.

Michael McDonald, a leading expert on voter turnout, stated that someone likely knew exactly what they were doing by choosing a methodology that favors the government’s interest.

Alito’s claim that parity has been achieved is simply not factual when viewed against the broader reality of American elections.

Fox News did not merely report that the FBI had raided the office of Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas. According to Fox reporter Bill Melugin, Fox News was “on scene” in Portsmouth, Virginia, where federal agents were raiding Lucas’ office.

Melugin’s post identified Lucas as a Democrat and a close ally of Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger. He also said federal law enforcement sources told Fox the raid was connected to a major corruption investigation.

Just as important, Melugin’s post noted that Alex Hogan was reporting from the scene.

That detail is what turned this from a standard breaking news item into a flashing red warning light. Hogan’s own X profile identifies her as a Fox News foreign correspondent based in London.

Fox somehow had her in Portsmouth at the right moment for a politically explosive FBI raid on a prominent Virginia Democrat.

The Political Context Makes It Worse

Sam Stein, a veteran political journalist, immediately raised the obvious suspicion. Lucas, he noted, had also overseen successful redistricting in Virginia. That does not prove the raid was politically motivated, and it does not prove Fox received improper advance notice.

It does make the timing and the media choreography impossible to ignore.

Responding to Melugin’s post, he wrote:

“i will say. some pretty remarkable instincts by Fox News to have its London correspondent placed in Portsmouth, Virginia right in time for the FBI raid of Louise Lucas.”

Scott MacFarlane added the strongest institutional context: the Justice Department’s own manual appears to address exactly this situation.

The manual says DOJ personnel may assist news media in recording or reporting on law enforcement activity only with prior approval from the appropriate United States Attorney or Assistant Attorney General. It also says that when a search warrant or arrest warrant is being executed, no advance information may be given to the news media without express approval.

A Lose-Lose For Fox And DOJ

Fox News and the Justice Department now have a problem neither can spin away.

If DOJ approved advance notice to Fox, the public deserves to know who approved it and why. If DOJ did not approve it, then someone inside federal law enforcement may have leaked sensitive information during a politically charged raid.

Either way, the appearance is ugly.

This is not about shielding Louise Lucas from investigation. It is about whether federal power and right-wing media worked in suspicious proximity during a raid on a prominent Democrat.

That demands an answer to one simple question: who told Fox News?

Donald Trump has apparently grown tired of comparing himself to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Too modest. Too pedestrian. Too many wooden teeth and stovepipe hats.

Trump reportedly wants to be remembered as “the most powerful person to ever live.” That sentence should come with a medical warning, a civics lesson, and perhaps a wellness check.

A proposed triumphal arch. A massive White House ballroom. Decorative flourishes that make the seat of American democracy look like a dictator’s Cheesecake Factory.

Voters wanted lower prices. Trump heard, “Please remodel the republic in your own image, preferably with Corinthian columns and bulletproof windows.”

Trump wants to be remembered as a titan. History will remember him as the guy who tried to cosplay Napoleon using public buildings, gold leaf, commemorative coins, and a budget-busting ballroom.

Caesar had the Ides of March. Napoleon had St. Helena. Alexander had conquest, legend, and youth. Trump has focus groups wondering why groceries are still expensive while he fusses over arches, columns, and chandeliers like a spray-tanned pharaoh trapped in a Home Depot commercial.

Trump has waged a relentless assault on democracy, justice, and truth. His administration weaponized the Justice Department to attack voting rights, pushed illegal wars without congressional approval, and unleashed ICE raids that terrorized immigrant communities.

Corruption and lies became the regime’s hallmark, while Trump’s bizarre self-aggrandizement masked a trail of destruction. This is the reality progressives have fought against every day.

Yet despite these assaults, the regime’s grip is weakening. Approval ratings have plummeted, opposition is rising, and even some of Trump’s own base is turning away.

The villain may still cast a dim shadow, but the cracks in his foundation are widening.

The Backlash Has Numbers

The resistance is no longer just a mood. It has bodies in the street, voters in motion, and a political class starting to sweat.

“No Kings” rallies rolled across the country, with millions attending those anti-Trump protests. The movement drew people who had once backed Trump but turned against him over war, broken promises, and the price of his chaos.

That matters because authoritarian politics depends on isolation. Strongmen want every dissenter to believe they are alone. They want fear to feel private and resistance to feel pointless.

Mass protest breaks that spell.

People look around and realize the country is not just what cable news panels say it is. America is also the nurse who took a day off to march, the retired teacher holding a handmade sign, the immigrant family standing in the crowd, the young organizer with a clipboard, and the former Trump voter who finally admits the con has gone too far.

Workers Are Winning

Trump talks about workers. Progressives are actually raising their wages.

The National Employment Law Project reports that 88 jurisdictions, including 22 states and 66 cities and counties, will raise minimum wages by the end of 2026. Seventy-nine of them will reach or exceed $15 an hour for some or all workers, and 57 will reach or exceed $17.

That is rent money. Grocery money. Prescription money. Bus fare. School supplies. A little breathing room in a country where billionaires have spent decades telling everyone else to be grateful for scraps.

This is what a new America looks like before anyone declares it on television.

It looks like local organizers, state lawmakers, unions, ballot campaigns, and community groups doing the work the federal government refuses to do. It looks like people deciding that the economy should not be a machine that devours working families and then lectures them about personal responsibility.

Climate Action Is Still Advancing

Trumpism treats the planet like a donor perk, something to be auctioned off to fossil fuel interests and wrapped in red, white, and blue slogans.

States are proving that climate policy can still work.

Washington’s Department of Ecology reported that its Clean Fuel Standard exceeded emissions-reduction expectations for the second year in a row. The policy eliminated 3 million metric tons of greenhouse gases in 2024 and generated more than $67 million for clean-fuel innovation and community investments.

That is the kind of progress cynics love to ignore because it is not flashy enough. It does not strut across a stage wearing too much bronzer. It simply cuts pollution, funds cleaner transportation, and makes fossil-fuel dependency a little less inevitable.

That is precisely why it matters.

A new America will not be born from one speech, one court ruling, or one election night. It will come from thousands of policies that make daily life cleaner, safer, fairer, and less hostage to corporate greed.

Trump builds monuments to himself.

The rest of us can build systems that outlast him.

Local Organizers Are Beating Big Money

Real power is not always loud. Sometimes it looks like five neighbors who refuse to let a giant corporation roll over their town.

Monterey Park, California, offered a perfect example. The Guardian reported that residents organized against a proposed data center the size of four football fields, warning that it could strain the power grid, raise energy costs, and create noise pollution.

Their campaign gathered nearly 5,000 petition signatures, used English, Chinese, and Spanish outreach, and won a city moratorium in six weeks.

That is not just a local land-use story.

That is democracy with calluses on its hands.

Communities are starting to ask harder questions about who pays the price for corporate expansion. They are asking why residents should absorb higher utility bills, dirtier air, louder neighborhoods, and strained infrastructure so powerful interests can profit.

MAGA politics worships domination. It tells people that big men, big money, and big corporations should decide the future.

Local organizing says otherwise.

Neighbors can still beat the machine when they talk to one another, share information, translate materials, show up at meetings, and refuse to be treated like background scenery in someone else’s profit model.

A Spark in the Rubble

Robert Reich recently made an argument that deserves more attention than another grim catalog of Trump’s daily outrages.

Clinton’s former labor secretary did not deny the scale of the crisis. Reich pointed to Trump’s attacks on voting rights, immigrant communities, critics, democratic institutions, and basic decency. He described a country being battered by corruption, cruelty, and authoritarian theater.

Then he made the turn that matters.

America is not only resisting Trump. A new progressivism is taking shape beneath the wreckage.

Reich pointed to organizers fighting corporate power in Montana and Hawaii, activists pushing tax fairness in California and New York, reproductive-rights advocates in Massachusetts, climate organizers in Washington state, immigrant worker groups in Oregon, and local communities resisting detention centers and massive AI data centers.

He also highlighted minimum-wage victories across the country and a new generation of progressive leaders moving into Congress, city halls, and state politics.

That is the story Trump cannot rage-post out of existence. People are not merely surviving the regime. They are learning from it, organizing against it, and building something better in response.

The New Bench Is Getting Bolder

The Democratic Party has spent years being told to fear its own base.

Voters keep sending a different message.

Progressive Democrat Analilia Mejia won New Jersey’s 11th District special election, holding the seat for Democrats in a House where Republicans have only a thin majority. Her win added to the sense that Democrats are entering the midterms with real momentum.

New York offered another signal. Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign built a volunteer army of more than 100,000 people, which The Guardian described as the greatest field operation in city campaign history.

That matters beyond any one race.

Young, progressive, multiracial, working-class movements are not waiting politely for permission from consultants who learned politics decades ago and never updated the software.

They are organizing around affordability, housing, wages, health care, climate, reproductive freedom, immigrant rights, and democracy itself.

They are also refusing to apologize for wanting government to work for ordinary people.

That is the quiet terror haunting MAGA and its billionaire friends. They can handle cynicism. They can monetize apathy. They can exploit despair.

However, a confident progressive movement is a much bigger problem.

MAGA Is in Ruins. The Future Is Ours.

The Trump regime’s collapse is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of something bigger.

Across the country, activists, organizers, and everyday citizens are building a movement that is more inclusive, more just, and more determined than ever.

The old order is fading, but the future is already taking shape in the streets, in the courts, and at the ballot box.

The embers of division are giving way to the light of solidarity and hope. A new America is being born.
