Elon Musk agreed to sit down with Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, on July 23rd.

Beddoes, who runs one of the world’s most respected publications and lives in London, arrived with something Musk rarely encounters: facts and the willingness to use them.

What followed was 85 minutes of real accountability, as the veteran editor challenged Musk on his most dangerous claims, his brazen interference in European politics, and his stunning indifference to the human cost of policies he helped engineer.

Musk wound up deflecting, attacking the press, and insisting the media is “despised.” That’s what being cornered looks like.

Musk Claims His USAID Cuts Caused “Zero” Deaths

The most revealing exchange came when Beddoes challenged Musk on whether the sudden dismantling of USAID-funded programs caused deaths in Africa. Musk did not hedge. He said “zero.”

Beddoes conceded she has “no doubt that... there’s a lot of waste in the US government,” before holding her ground: it’s “a fair criticism that the way you shut down a whole bunch of programs probably in fact certainly caused unnecessary suffering.”

“No, no,” he replied. “It caused a lot of complaining.”

She pressed harder. “So you don’t buy the idea that anybody, to put it really crudely and simply, any kid in Africa died?”

“Zero. I just don’t think that’s right,” Musk replied.

Standing her ground, Beddoes responded:

“Not everyone functions as fast as you do. If funding is cut off for antiretrovirals overnight and it just stops, then people will die when they don’t have access to them.”

“No, only if they cannot get funding for that,” he answered, pointing to the Gates Foundation and MacKenzie Bezos as substitutes for gutted programs.

Beddoes noted that “in many of these countries, USAID was the biggest funder” of health care systems. Musk called it “a political organization” and cut her off: “Regime change.”

She replied:

“I think the pace and the suddenness with which it happened will almost certainly have caused unnecessary suffering and deaths.”

“No, I think that’s totally false,” Musk shot back, insisting private foundations could have covered the gap: “If they didn’t, I would say they’re equally responsible.”

Beddoes sarcastically absorbed his claim, stating “I see... Um, zero people, I hear you loud and clear.”

Musk Claims Neo-Nazis Are “Normal People”

Beddoes then turned to Musk’s meddling in European politics. Musk, who admitted he hasn’t been to the United Kingdom in years, has used his platform on X, with close to 250 million followers, to spread alarm about the continent.

Musk opened by insisting he wasn’t even that focused on Europe. Beddoes wasn’t buying it. “I think judging by your posts, you’re pretty concerned about Europe,” she said, noting that she actually lives in London and is there “the whole time.”

She told him plainly that he supports “not just the populist right but the far right. In fact, very fringe parties in some countries.”

Musk rejected every word of it. “No, I support the normal people,” he said. Then, he demanded she and the rest of the media abandon the label entirely: “I would like to just admonish you and the media for the absurd characterization of the far right. It is false and misleading and nonsense.”

Beddoes pointed out that Musk, with close to 250 million followers on X, had posted that “civil war in Britain is inevitable.” She asked him directly when he was last in the UK. “A few years ago,” he admitted.

“Exactly,” she said. “So I live there. I’m there the whole time.”

Musk struck back: “That is not true. You live in a cloistered existence.”

She answered without missing a beat: “No, I don’t, actually. And the numbers also disprove what you say.”

She did not accept his framing of who counted as “normal.” Beddoes told him directly:

“What worries me is that the people you are supporting are really quite vile people in some areas.

Like some members of the AfD, Alice Weidel, whom I’ve met, is a perfectly thoughtful person.

But in her party are some real neo-Nazis, are some really, really awful people, and your blanket support of this kind of party with 240 million followers means that you have a power in Europe that I think perhaps you don’t realize the scale of impact you have.”

The Data He Couldn’t Answer

Musk had laid out his three core principles proudly: secure borders, safe cities, sensible spending. Beddoes took every one of them and turned them around.

“Does the US or do European countries score better on those?” she asked. Then she answered it herself:

“The US is better? No, safe cities, much more dangerous in the US than the UK. Sensible spending, bigger deficit here, out of control. . . [Y]ou failed to reduce it. Secure borders, now under the Trump administration, I agree with you, before not. But on two out of three unequivocally, Europe is in a better place. Yet you seem to paint a picture of Europe being a hellhole.”

Musk denied ever calling Europe a hellhole. Beddoes did not accept it.

“You say civil war in Britain is inevitable, and then you, you, you basically proselytize for this Citizen Vigilante film which really does paint Europe as a hellhole. It just starts with, you know, ominous music and it says Europe, well there are, there was out of control rape and murder.”

Musk deflected to “Soros DAs” to explain American crime rates. Beddoes redirected with precision:

“I think the prevalence of guns has quite a lot to do with it too. I mean, this is a much more dangerous country. Murder rates are much higher in large part because there’s so much, there are so many guns.”

He pivoted to European heat deaths, suggesting The Economist should write about air conditioning. Beddoes noted the publication had run a cover story on exactly that topic the previous week. He had no follow-up.

A Record That Won’t Disappear

Musk tried to flip the script and make the press the villain. He pointed to the 15% favorable rating for journalists and declared the media “despised.”

Beddoes answered him directly: “I do know that in the United States. . . the shoe is on the other foot. They hate you. I think they hate you far more than they hate me.”

She acknowledged journalism’s failures plainly.

“I think there is certainly a loss of trust in journalism. I think in part there have been mistakes by journalists and journalism. I totally acknowledge that.”

Then she turned it back on him:

“But I also think that the kind of polarized environment, particularly on social media, fostered by the kinds of things you are pushing on X, actually helps this. Makes it worse.”

Musk escalated. “I don’t think so. I think, I think you’re the problem, the media. Um, and, and speaking of loathing, you’re loathed far more than I am, and you don’t seem to even realize that.”

Beddoes was unmoved.

“I think, I think very few people know who I am relative to you. So I don’t think I play in the same game.”

Musk kept pushing: “The media collectively, um. So I mean, you’re hated, do you even, do you even know that? You probably don’t.”

She answered with a statement of principles he had no real counter for. “I like to think that I’m aware of my own personal shortcomings and The Economist’s shortcomings and our worldview shortcomings.

But what we stand for as you, as you know, is liberal values. Traditional classical liberal values, where we worry about concentrations of power, and we believe in the individual and the dignity of the individual.”

Epilogue: The Mask Comes Off

Musk resorted to personal attacks and online bluster following the interview, even labeling Beddoes a “traitor to the West” on X after the sit-down aired. This petty reaction highlights a clear strategic defeat for the billionaire.

Right-wing figures and tech oligarchs have relied for years on uncritical podcast hosts and friendly echo chambers to spread their talking points without challenge. Beddoes proved that rigorous, fact-based journalism can break through that shield and hold even the world’s richest man accountable.

This disastrous public appearance leaves Musk in an increasingly difficult position. His attempt to play both a benevolent tech innovator and a radical MAGA political player is collapsing under its own hypocrisy.

Progressive voters and media watchdogs continue to shine a light on his actions, and Musk’s influence will face growing pushback.

The truth remains the most potent tool for dismantling right-wing disinformation, and interviews like this demonstrate that holding powerful oligarchs accountable is entirely possible when journalists stand their ground.
