“You say civil war in Britain is inevitable, and then you, you, you basically proselytize for this Citizen Vigilante film which really does paint Europe as a hellhole. It just starts with, you know, ominous music and it says Europe, well there are, there was out of control rape and murder.”

Musk deflected to “Soros DAs” to explain American crime rates. Beddoes redirected with precision:

“I think the prevalence of guns has quite a lot to do with it too. I mean, this is a much more dangerous country. Murder rates are much higher in large part because there’s so much, there are so many guns.”

Musk kept pushing: “The media collectively, um. So I mean, you’re hated, do you even, do you even know that? You probably don’t.”

NATO leaders gathered to discuss the war in Ukraine, the Iranian nuclear threat, and the future of Western security.

What they got instead was an 80-year-old man wandering through a geopolitical minefield he clearly hadn't studied for, leaving a trail of wreckage so complete that late-night writers probably wept with gratitude.

Four gaffes. One summit. Zero accountability. Let's go.

“Do You Have a Question for President Putin?”

The moment that launched a thousand screenshots happened when Trump turned to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, then at members of the press, and said:

“Do you have a question for President Putin?”

That alone would have been bad enough. But when journalists reacted, and some corrected him, Trump did not simply apologize, laugh it off, or move on.

He doubled down:

“Do you have a question for President Putin? Not Zelenskyy, Putin. Because I’m going to ask him that question.”

Again, imagine if Biden, Obama, Hillary Clinton, or Kamala Harris had stood at a NATO summit and claimed the “Islamic Republic of Japan” had fired missiles at an American aircraft carrier.

Fox News would have needed a fainting couch. But with Trump, the bar is buried so deep underground that his supporters just pretend the dirt is part of the architecture.

Number One on “Tic Tac”

And he was not done. Trump started bragging about TikTok and said:

“You know who’s number one on Tic Tac? I am. I’m number one on TikTok and all I talk about is how bad communism is.”

He said "Tic Tac." Like the breath mint. At NATO. While Zelenskyy stood there next to him.

Set aside the self-promotion. Set aside the fact that he cannot pronounce the name of the app he claims to dominate. Instead, focus on the context.

NATO allies are discussing Russian aggression, nuclear proliferation, and the survival of Western order, and the man representing America chose that moment to brag about his social media following.

He Couldn’t Even Get the Acronym Right

Then came the viral bonus round.

While attacking Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, Trump railed against the “JCPOC.”
The actual acronym is JCPOA, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

That may sound small, but it matters because this is not some random citizen at a diner trying to remember foreign policy alphabet soup.

This is Trump trying to sound authoritative about a nuclear agreement he has spent years attacking, while still mangling the name of the thing he claims to understand better than everyone else.

Imagine, for one second, that Barack Obama had called Angela Merkel “President Putin,” confused Iran with Japan, mangled a major treaty acronym, and then bragged about his MySpace page at a NATO summit.

The conservative media apparatus would have melted down. Hearings would have been called. The phrase “cognitive decline” would have appeared on every chyron on Fox News for six months straight.

The standard that MAGA applies to everyone else has never once been applied to their guy.

The rest of the world is watching. They are taking notes. And we should be paying attention.

We need to stop celebrating every conservative who turns on Trump. The impulse is understandable. Trump has spent nearly a decade torching democratic norms, and when someone from his own political universe turns around and calls him a fraud, a grifter, or a threat to the republic, it feels like vindication.

It feels like progress. It feels like allies materializing from thin air. We have to resist that feeling. It is a trap.

The anti-Trump coalition has become a refuge for people who spent years building the exact political conditions that made Trump possible, who profited from that work, and who, stripped of their MAGA veneer, still hold views hostile to the interests of working people, women, minorities, and democracy itself.

Sharing an enemy does not make someone a friend. A quick survey of the most prominent anti-Trump conservatives proves the point brutally well, and we owe it to ourselves to look closely.

The Rogues’ Gallery

Joe Walsh is Exhibit One.

He rode the 2010 Tea Party wave into Congress, representing Illinois’s 8th District from 2011 to 2013. He lost his reelection bid and retreated into conservative talk radio, where he spent years stoking the rage and resentment that fed directly into Trumpism.

He has since declared himself a Democrat, a conversion that would be more credible if he had not spent decades doing the opposite of everything Democrats claim to stand for.

Walsh’s political transformation tracks exactly as far as his personal antagonism toward Trump, and not an inch further. What we are watching is a rebrand, not a reckoning.

Michael Cohen is Exhibit Two.

His situation is almost too perfect to believe. Cohen served as Trump’s personal attorney and self-described “fixer,” the man who handled the dirty work and looked the other way when the law got inconvenient.

He became a prominent anti-Trump voice after his legal troubles caught up with him, a conversion that conveniently coincided with prison.

Yesterday, Cohen told CNN that he and Trump had buried the hatchet several months ago. The relationship, Cohen said, was “cordial and growing.”

We should read that again. The man who spent years warning the country about Trump’s criminality quietly reconciled with him. That is not principled opposition. That is a leveraged negotiation.

Liz Cheney gets held up as the gold standard of Republican anti-Trumpism.

She stood in the well of the House after January 6 and called out what happened for what it was. She served on the January 6 Select Committee. She got primaried out of her seat for it. People who should know better have called her a hero.

What those people rarely mention is her voting record. Cheney voted with Trump 93 percent of the time during his presidency: tax cuts for the wealthy, rollbacks of environmental protections, positions on immigration that would make hardliners nod.

Her objection to Trump is specific. She drew the line at a violent assault on the constitutional transfer of power. Everything before and after that line, Cheney is a Cheney, daughter of Dick, defender of a conservatism that has been quietly waging its own war on American democracy for decades.

Opposing the most theatrical symptom of a disease is not the same as opposing the disease.

The Lincoln Project, for its part, made a lot of great television/social media.

Its ads were sharp, its social media presence was relentless, and its Republican credentials gave it a kind of credibility that a progressive PAC could never claim.

What sat underneath all of that was an organization that paid lavishly, burned through cash at a rate that raised serious questions about financial stewardship, and harbored a serious harassment scandal involving one of its co-founders.

The Lincoln Project is not a pro-democracy organization that happens to have a conservative aesthetic. It is a fundraising machine that found a profitable lane in anti-Trump sentiment and drove it hard.

The Pattern Behind the Pattern

None of this is accidental or coincidental. There is a logic to it.

When Trump broke with Republican orthodoxy on personal style, alliances, and the procedural norms of power transfer, he created a class of conservatives with personal, professional, or legal reasons to oppose him specifically.

That opposition is real. But it is also bounded, transactional, and self-interested.

• Walsh turned on Trump because Trump co-opted and then eclipsed the exact political crusade Walsh once championed.

• Cohen is anti-Trump until Trump becomes useful again, as his CNN interview makes clear.

• Cheney is anti-Trump because he tried to blow up the machinery of government that her family and class have operated for generations.

• The Lincoln Project is anti-Trump because anti-Trump became a revenue stream.

None of them are anti-MAGA in any meaningful sense. None of them have repudiated the policy agenda that gutted unions, hollowed out the social safety net, stoked racial panic, and built the conditions that allowed someone like Trump to seize a major American political party and nearly end the republic.

They oppose the man. They are largely fine with the wreckage.

What It Costs to Forget This

Coalitions built on shared enemies are fragile. They crack the moment the shared enemy weakens, or the moment one side decides the enemy is useful again.

Cohen already showed us how quickly that can happen. Walsh’s reinvention is as much a career move as a moral awakening. Cheney will not be fighting for reproductive rights or labor protections in whatever comes next for her. The Lincoln Project will find another product.

Progressive politics cannot survive on the terms of its most convenient allies. Rehabilitation stories make for good television, but they make for terrible strategy.

Vetting matters. Values matter. A person who spent their career building the house that Trump moved into is not our partner because they suddenly hate the tenant.

The enemy of our enemy is not our friend. They are, at best, someone who wants the same thing we want right now, for completely different reasons, and will want something very different from us tomorrow.

We need to keep our eyes open.

Bottom Line:

We deserve better allies than opportunists and rebranders. Shared opposition to one man is not a coalition. It’s a coincidence.

It’s so completely mindless and stupid and sophomoric that it makes me wonder if they literally have brainwashed you people.

Putin’s war in Ukraine is killing his soldiers by the hundreds of thousands and gutting the Russian economy from the inside out.

Three years into an invasion he promised would be swift and victorious, Putin is presiding over a catastrophe of his own making.

Ukraine isn’t just surviving. Ukraine is winning.

The Death Toll Is Staggering

Nothing prepares you for the numbers. Foreign Policy published an essay on June 25, 2026, by Peter Frankopan, professor of global history at Oxford, and the statistics he cites deserve to be read straight, without softening.

“Anna Keast-Butler, the director of British intelligence agency GCHQ, cited new intelligence indicating that Russian war deaths had likely reached almost half a million; various Western sources put total Russian casualties at significantly more than 1 million.”

Read that again. Half a million dead. More than a million casualties total.

It gets worse. Frankopan writes: “Russia is now incurring eight men killed or seriously wounded for every one lost by Ukraine.” Eight to one. That is not a war of attrition. That is a slaughterhouse.

The replacements are running out. As Frankopan reports:

The results are measurable: Ukrainian drone strikes have reduced Russian oil refining capacity by 700,000 barrels per day. That is not a symbolic number. That is a structural wound.

Russia has also missed multiple operational deadlines, lost enormous quantities of military equipment, and watched its Kremlin masters demand outcomes that the battlefield cannot deliver.

The disconnect between what Putin says and what his military can actually do has become its own kind of crisis.

Russia Is Coming Apart at the Seams

The battlefield losses are catastrophic, but the damage does not stop there. Russia’s internal situation is deteriorating fast, and the Kremlin’s response has made things worse.

Military spending now accounts for half of Russia’s entire state budget. Half. That leaves precious little for the economy, for services, for the things that keep a society functional.

The result is predictable: high inflation, labor shortages, and collapsing real estate and commercial demand across the country. The Russian economy is not in recession. It is in managed collapse.

The Kremlin has responded by nationalizing assets and granting financial institutions paramilitary powers. That last part is worth pausing on. Banks with paramilitary powers.

Russia is paramilitarizing its civilian institutions because it has no other tools left. The state is militarizing everything it touches.

Discontent is growing, not just among ordinary Russians but among the elite class that has historically propped up Putin’s rule. The social contract, built on the promise of stability and prosperity in exchange for political silence, is fraying.

Russian elites are not foolish. They can read a balance sheet, and what they see is not encouraging.

The Kremlin’s political demands remain completely disconnected from battlefield realities. Putin keeps insisting on victory conditions that his military cannot achieve. That gap, between what he promises and what is actually happening, is widening every month.
