“I think you’re incompetent,” Donald Trump told her. Rep. Joyce Beatty did not miss a beat. “I know you’re incompetent,” she fired back.
That was how it started. Beatty, a Democrat from Ohio, had just beaten Trump in federal court, and she walked into a Kennedy Center board meeting where he was calling in by phone as chairman.
She wasn’t there to be lectured or bullied.
“The Most Unprofessional Thing”
Beatty laid it out plainly during a Tuesday appearance on MS Now. “We were in court right before we went into the board meeting. So they opened up the board meeting by informing the board that we had, again, Beatty v. Trump. Beatty had been victorious. And he went into a tantrum,” she said.
“Let me just make it simple: it was the most unprofessional thing that I’ve ever witnessed or been a part of. He went into name-calling from everything.”
She refused to sit and take it.
“I looked to the chair… and I said, ‘Are we really going to do this? This is unprofessional.’ But I was not going to let him call me awful things.”
Then came the threat.
“He said he was going to hold me responsible if something fell out of the ceiling and killed someone. And I told him, I said, ‘You’re already killing people. We’re at war. We also have people who are starving. You’re doing this.’”
“More Bankruptcies Than Anybody in the Room”
Trump apparently tried to lecture her about his genius as a builder. It backfired spectacularly.
As Beatty explained:
“He wanted to talk about how great he was with developing, and he didn’t know anything about me, but I had never done anything; this was the biggest thing I had done. So I reminded him that he had more bankruptcies than anybody in the room.”
“I really went there because I was not going to let him,” she continued.
“He was there in his role as chairman of the board. I was not going to let him bully me, intimidate me, and the facts stand for themselves.”
The context here matters. Beatty sued after Trump-aligned board members tried to rebrand the institution as the “Trump-Kennedy Center” during a meeting where she was repeatedly muted and blocked from speaking.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled in her favor, blocking the renaming and ordering Trump’s name stripped from the building, its grounds, website, and trademark applications.
The Ransom Note
Trump has bragged about “getting” the center $257 million. Beatty immediately shredded that claim.
“Last time I checked, it was the taxpayers’ money that we voted on out of our congressional budget. The Congress gave them $257 million that is still sitting there for renovation.”
His next move was a naming scheme dressed up as generosity. “So now I’m going to give you money for an endowment, a trust, and I want it to say ‘renovated by Donald Trump,’” Beatty recounted him saying.
Her verdict: “That’s still putting your name on the memorial; that’s unlawful.”
A Washington Post report warned the center could close as early as Tuesday, noting officials argued that “publicly recognizing Trump could secure his help raising enough money to keep the institution afloat.” One host said what everyone was thinking: “that sounds like a ransom to me.”

“He Was Unhinged”
Asked by MS NOW panelists about Trump’s mental state during the roughly eight or nine-minute blowup, Beatty did not sugarcoat it.
“He was unhinged. He was hollering and screaming, and he was saying things like, ‘You’re holding up everything. You’re an obstructionist.’ And I said, ‘You’re holding up the country.’”
Pressed on whether he “had his faculties together,” she told the panel: “This is a man that has us at war. People are dying. This is a man that wants to rename countries and so many other things. He has no regard for what’s at stake.”
Co-host Symone Sanders-Townsend named the real game. Trump, she said, is trying to “arrest the culture.” Beatty instantly agreed: “This is a cultural capture of the Kennedy Center, and he’s throwing a temper tantrum to do it.”
Facing Down MAGA Bullying Without Blinking
Trump assumed he could intimidate an experienced Black congresswoman into submissive silence, but he picked the wrong target.
Beatty made it clear that she answers to the American public and the United States Constitution, not an autocrat screaming through a telephone speaker.
Beatty called out Trump’s predictable pattern of attacking anyone who refuses to bend the knee:
“We have witnessed this after each board meeting. If he doesn’t get what he wants, he literally comes on, and he’s hollering and screaming, and it doesn’t matter if it’s the judge or his family, anybody that does not side with him, he attacks them. He just picked the wrong person.”
Trump now finds himself cornered, discredited, and legally vulnerable. “We are in a very dangerous place with this president because he’s in contempt of the law, in contempt of court right now,” Beatty warned.
Her fearless response showed the entire nation how to confront MAGA hostility: stand firm, tell the cold, hard truth, and wipe the floor with them.
