Thank you for reporting this. I am so proud of and impressed with Canada. And, happy for them. Steady and respectful wins the race.

Happy New Year Zoe… we are praying you guys get your country back in 2026!!!

Thank you. I want us to be good neighbors. I apologize for our recent bad behavior.

Oh and the Supreme Court. They don’t deserve to be there either!

Not OUR bad behavior! The Felon’s bad behavior, conduct, corruption, attitude . . .

But I have grateful Canada has not built a sustainable wall between our two countries! Thank you, Canada. And please know that we the sane people of America are crying.

I would not invite Blue States to be part of Canada. They also have their fair share of MAGAs and that we do not need. We have enough of those already. However I love the good neighbour concept. This kind of a relationship requires that both sides work for it.

donald trump has no concept of how business functions and thus when the bully tried to badger Canada they simply refused to play his game. The outcome was felt immediately. Canada stopped sending the U.S. the trade goods that trump thought he had "negotiated" to his advantage. Canada outmaneuvered trump since he does not understand that trade is reciprocal ONLY when it is mutually beneficial. GOOD JOB CANADA! Keep it up until this dolt understands the bigger picture.

Yes‼️

My wife & I made our first Canadian trip from Houston in 1990. We love to camp, hike, & explore national parks (before kids in this instance). We spent 3 weeks in Alberta & British Columbia as far north as Jasper NP & the start of the Alaska Hwy. It was an absolutely terrific experience - stunning beauty & the nicest peoples.‼️ Very clean & well-maintained, as we had expected. Soon we'd like to visit Montreal & to the east... Newfoundland, Prince Edward Isle, Nova Scotia as well as MaineπŸ‘πŸ˜Š

Mr Carney exemplifies the art of being both a diplomat and a businessman in a way that Trump will never be able to. That’s why Trump hates him so much. But since he can’t begin to match Mr. Carney’s leadership qualities, all he’s left with is his go to: ineffectual threats, ranting and name-calling. He simply doesn’t understand the art of the deal in the same strategic way that Mr. Carney does. And that’s never going to change since Trump has the attention span of a gnat.

Jenny Rackham's avatar

Carney is a very successful banker. Trump bankrupts his own casinos. I know which I would prefer to be running my country's economic policies.

KlarKent60's avatar

Terrific summaryβœ”οΈπŸ‘β€ΌοΈ

Nicholas Pretzel's avatar

Exactly! The only thing Trumplethinskin has ever been successful at is conning people. First into believing he's a shrewd businessman. I think even I could make a go of a casino and I don't have the slightest business acumen. Trumplethinskin bankrupted not just one, but five! That takes a special kind of incompetence! He was virtually broke before β€˜The Apprentice’. He made some kind of deal with the media that whenever they printed his name they preceded it with the word β€˜billionaire’. He squandered his substantial inheritance, lost a fortune on Trump Tower 2 when everyone advised him against it. He's infamous for defaulting on his debts and not paying his bills. He has no regard for the law and reneges on any deal that doesn't favour him personally. Why anyone still wants to make any deal with him when he's apt to tear it up on a whim or a perceived slight is beyond me. He's too stupid to realize how stupid he is. He compensates his pea sized brain with an ego the size of a planet. He's a bully and like all bullies he's a coward. Sooner or later his hubris and moronic incompetence will catch up with him, I'm just surprised it hasn't already, he seems to be coated in teflon. He has no imagination, so you can guarantee that every accusation he makes is an admission. If you haven't read it, this article by one of β€˜The Apprentice’'s producers makes telling reading (he couldn't publish earlier as he'd signed some sort of non–disclosure agreement): https://slate.com/culture/2024/05/donald-trump-news-2024-trial-verdict-apprentice.html

Richard Nash's avatar

You said much of what my assessment has always been. The only thing I would add is what I believe to be the most dangerous part: His inability to accept responsibility. We have seen the lengths he will go to not to be a "loser" (2021 insurrection attempt & the big lie); along with many examples of how he can't even be wrong about anything. He somehow thinks that if he wears a hat that says "Trump was right about everything" someone might actually believe it? Or it makes for a good psychological crutch. Especially when, as you aptly call him "Trumplethinskin", he has to rant and spew lies and nonsensical self-serving BS on Truth Social and at news conferences because he can't handle the criticism. Probably makes him feel like a loser if he doesn't attack the source. Now, in his older more demented state, he is so deep in his alternate-reality world that I don't know when his loyal lackeys will finally impose real reality on him (ie telling him the truth).

Winston Smith London Oceania's avatar

Actually, Trumpkopf doesn't understand the art of the deal period.

Debbie Ross's avatar

I like gnats. It has a nice ring tone……gnats, gnats, gnats…..crazy little gnats.

Chris O'Connor's avatar

No. Spiders can be cool. I was thinking of some kind of intestinal parasite for trump.

Barbara Baldwin's avatar

Fair enough. I’m afraid of spiders though I agree they can be cool. So intestinal parasites it is. Coccidia or Giardia?? Your choice. πŸ˜†

Chris O'Connor's avatar

Giardia is very smelly! Believe me; I've lived in India so I know! A perfect choice for trump!

Barbara Baldwin's avatar

Exactly! Ok agreed. I’ve got a couple kittens with it right now, unfortunately. 😩

KlarKent60's avatar

Yes... and similarly-sized gnat-brain, as well. Donald cannot think critically dep enough to make truly successful decisions based on analysis of factual considerations. To hinder his proper decision-making even more, he always thinks he's right, & surrounds himself (especially of late) with toadie sycophants who possess a weak combination of incompetence & fear of telling him he may be wrong.

This GQP Congress operates in the same vein.

And not to mention Canucks have stopped visiting/vacationing the U.S., causing a once amicable relationship with our northern neighbors. Not anymore. My passport was never stamped by Cuban authorities and I was admitted without fanfare. I was treated with great respect and my greenbacks were much appreciated. I’m afraid to try it again. Trump is such a hump and I fear he will make things much harder on the Cuban people. If there was a buck in any deal with Cuba he would be hot on the trail…

About that β€œcaring” part….

US citizens need to realize that the non-US deals we’re putting together under Carney are binding for decade upon decade. We won’t simply β€œundo” them if ever Trump and his cabal are ousted. It won’t matter. We are binding with Europe, Indonesia, Asia, etc. These agreements are and will continue to be long standing in nature.

It won’t matter how sorry or concerned the US is a few years down the road. It won’t change the long term deals we are making now that do not include your country.

Sandra Tuttle's avatar

I think a lot of us U.S. citizens fully realize the long term negative effects the last 10 years will bring down on this country. I applaud everything Canada has done to take care of themselves, you had to make these changes.

It will all work out in the end. I wish only happiness and peace for the Canadian people and their leadership. Canada is a fine country, I have worked and traveled there from East to West.

There are still a lot of fine people in the U.S. and over time we will do what is necessary to get back in the good graces of the world. Hopefully, most will learn a long term lesson from this debacle.

Peace brother.

Kathleen Stahl's avatar

The true Americans that still have brain cells working, completely understand and congratulate Canada for having a strong and effective leader and people who care about their country. The crisis that we are dealing with in the country we used to love, is breaking the hearts of most Americans. This will end but it might not be pretty. The country will come back once the idiot and his minions are behind bars. Use us as a lesson. Don’t get complacent. Vote…hold people accountable…listen to what is being said and make sure your media is held to accountability.

How do you think the US is going to react when its trade with others goes into the toilet? Start trading and siding with Russia and China and India? They’re the only ones left. Western countries are transitioning away from the US, especially defence.

Defence is nearly your whole economy. That’s why you choose going after resource-rich foreign states.

I don’t see this ending with the actions of the good-minded citizens of the USA.

Sandra Tuttle's avatar

About half or more of U.S. detest the wrong minded path our govt has taken. That is roughly 171 million people who will work together to fix this. The old ship turns very slowly but it has started its turn never fear. This 171 million are fair minded, hard working, and know what we must do, and the toll this will take.

I estimate it will take about 10 years for us to start gaining trade, respect, and some trust back from our previous allies.

Alexis's avatar

The problem is that those 171 million people really aren’t doing much of anything except going on social media to complain about what’s happening or calling all their Representatives, and putting ALL your hopes in the Mid terms. Having a couple of really large protests didn’t move the needle even a millimetre.

And while the Mid terms look great for the left, there is nothing to stop Trump from disallowing ANY voting and simply appoint people to empty positions. The Supremes have basically said β€œTrump is a good boy and can do whatever he wants”.

In the mean time, Trump and the sycophantic and violently racist members of his administration are tightening their grip on the entirety of US society, and have achieved fascism.

Plus anytime anyone who has lived through fascist dictatorships and have successfully overthrown them tries to explain to USians what they need to do to succeed, are told that the USians are special people and anything that has ever happened elsewhere in the world has NO bearing on what they are currently experiencing, and they are β€œworking” on a fix.

Good luck, because at the rate you are β€œworking on it” the USA will stay a fascist dictatorship for decades.

Sandra Tuttle's avatar

It is unfair to say that 171 million are not working, being effective, and impacting the future of the USA. Here are just a few examples I know about in my state and this proliferates throughout all 50.

1. Local leaders all Dem in Nov: After years of Repub domination in my town, this past Nov we elected a majority Dem Town Council.

2. Indivisible groups nationwide: an infrastructure is in place now nationally to organize and orchestrate nationwide protests. This was practically non existant prior to 2025.

3. Judicial push for Dem judges state Supreme court: there are multiple orgs pushing to elect a majority Dem S.C. in my state. Complete with fundraising and education at the state level.

4. Stocking, volunteer, for food banks: with the after effects of the pandemic followed by reductions by Trvmp in food for school kids, eliminating healthcare insurance, closing rural hospitals, privatizing schools, etc, we have had our hands full on this level. However, somehow everyone has stepped up and mostly fed and housed he poor, elderly, and hungry.

All this is just in my local area. The good deeds are exponential across the country.

The ship has turned. We are getting up to full steam, this will happen and the U.S. will be saved.

Elizabeth G Neer's avatar

And we must be in greater numbers than that, knowing that the toddler’s approval rating is now below 40%.

Sandra Tuttle's avatar

Agree. And all 171 million+ need to apply maximum pressure on the Dem leadership to use every law and tool in the country's arsenal to rid us of this blight. It is an existential crisis! The Dems that wont agree need to be banished from congress.

Yvonne Cormier's avatar

I understand your perspective, however how long will it take for a new government to adequately tax the uber rich? That is where the $$$ is.

Sandra Tuttle's avatar

My thoughts are we don't need all the money, per se.

I think we need to hold the rich, corporations, broligarchy accountable for their bad acts. And hold them with an iron fist, this includes govt leadership. If we didnt have corruption in our governmntal system, I dont think things would have gone off the rails. Most people dont have to be rich, they just want fairness. A lot of our laws to maintain fairness have been strewn on the sides of the road. Laws controlling monopolies, fair business practices and their monitoring, etc.

There's nothing fair about three South African greedy trouble makers ruining our country along with the exec branch.

And the biggest need, educating our populace.

Unfortunately I’m a US citizen and do not yet hold another passport. I was in the process of applying for residency elsewhere but have not been allowed to travel outside the US to finish that process. I’m trapped here. Against my will. And prevented from getting to my job or desperately needed medical care that I can no longer afford in the US.

William Hancock's avatar

This is a point Americans foolishly ignore. When changes to the supply chain are forced upon you, they tend to be permanent. This is not like trying out a new restaurant. There is a significant up-front cost to altering trade relationships. Once they are done, they tend to stay done. In trade, predictability, reliability and trustworthiness trump everything. The US is no longer any of those things.

It isn’t like the US is going away. I’ve made it a practice in my life not to bet against the US. But this time feels different. The things that made the US great it is no longer willing to do. I feel like the US some time ago hit the high water mark and now is in a gradual retreat. What makes me feel that way? If the US was still on the rise, they never would have put a sociopathic moron in charge.

The US will still remain a significant country, but it will no longer be the global hegemon it has been since the end of the Cold War.

The last time the US became isolationist and protectionist we wound up with a world war that killed sixty million people globally. After that we built institutions to prevent it from happening again. Now one moron and his equally moronic followers have lit it all on fire.

KlarKent60's avatar

I believe America will "correct itself" eventually. But likely not in my lifetime. And, add to your point that the rest of the World also is giving up on America bc even IF we elected a DEM President Shapiro, Buttagieg, Newsome or other...another demagogue could be elected after 4, 8, 12 or 16 years AGAIN. So, enticing Europe, Australia, Japan, S Korea & Canada back to "business & trust as usual" won't happen. Some nations may eagerly do shorter-term trade deals...but will have justified skepticism to commit longer deals or share vital intelligence - risk of being severely burned again. It would take a massive effort on the US Congress to enact laws strengthening areas IQ45 has violated.

William Hancock's avatar

It's really my biggest fear. The earliest a Dem could be president is January of 2029. By then the country will be in utter chaos.

American voters are pretty stupid. All our domestic institutions and foreign relations will be in a shambles. And if the Democrats haven't fixed everything in two months, I fear voters will start to turn on them. They have very short memories and rarely assign blame where it is due.

A quick review. Trump had a bungled Covid response that ultimately led to a million Americans dying. America has four percent of global population but had about twenty percent of global Covid fatalities.

Trump's GDP growth in his first three years was basically indistinguishable from GDP growth in Obama's last three years. Trump had 2.5 percent and Obama had 2.4 percent. And Obama added on average 19k more jobs per month in his last three years than Trump did in his first three years. But Trump incessantly said he had the best economy ever and a lot of morons believed that.

Most Republican presidencies end in recession and Trump's was no different. He had the lowest GDP growth in his term of all post-WWII presidents. There were 2.7 million fewer Americans employed at the end of his term than the beginning. Trump lost 158k manufacturing jobs in his term and many of those losses were before Covid and related to his ill-advised tariffs on steel and aluminum and launching a trade war with China. China started switching to getting ag commodities from Argentina and Brazil in Trump's first term. And since far more Americans make things from steel rather than make steel, a tariff is a tax that we place only on ourselves. If we have more expensive inputs than the rest of the world, we will not be price competive. US exports of manufactured goods crashed under Trump. As did ag exports.

Trump added 7.8 trillion dollars to the national debt in just four years. Most of that debt came in Trump's first three years, before Covid. It was mostly attributable to tax cuts to the one percent and corporations. And this debt came not in a financial meltdown but at a time of full employment and modest but positive GDP growth. Do you think adding that kind of stimulus to an already decent economy might have been a factor in inflation in subsequent years? Trump raised the national debt from 102% of GDP to 124% of GDP in just four years. A quarter of all US debt between 1776 and the end of Trump's term happened during Trump's term.

Trump talked a lot about increasing oil production but it actually went down in his term. Why? Because he let the price of oil crash. The future's price was actually negative for a while. Most people who trade oil never take physical possession of oil. They sell their contracts before expiration to somebody who actually uses oil. But demand for oil had crashed so badly that there was nobody to buy the contracts and traders actually had to pay people to take their contracts. Low oil prices bankrupted a lot of the frackers. Frackers are responsible for the growth in US oil production in recent decades. But their cost of production is relatively high. They need oil in the high fifties or low sixties just to break even. The Saudis sit on a huge lake oil and their breakeven point is about six dollars a barrel. Low oil prices hurt us and allow the Arabs to increase market share.

Despite all this a plurality of Americans thought Trump was the right guy to manage the economy.

Compare this to Biden. Biden had 3.2% GDP growth. In the last fifty years that was behind only Reagan (3.6%) and Clinton (4.0%). Biden added 16 million new jobs to the economy and nearly a million manufacturing jobs. Biden had unemployment at or near all time lows for three straight years. Biden had the stock market at all time highs. The markets went up 48% during his term. Corporate earnings and consumer confidence were high. Consumer spending was high. Wages grew under Biden. US energy production and exports were at all time highs. And the ratio of debt to GDP fell from 124% to 120%. This was mostly due to strong GDP growth.

It was kind of a no-brainer who was going to be best for the economy Trump or Harris, but voters got it spectacularly wrong. They blamed the people who were fixing Trump's mess for Trump's mess.

What Biden did with energy was particularly interesting. When oil prices rose, he released oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. When oil prices got too low he refilled the reserve with cheap oil. He put a floor under oil prices that kept them high enough for the frackers to stay in business. And he kept them from getting so high they became a drag on the economy. US energy production was at an all time high when Biden left office. And by selling high and buying back low he made billions in profits for the treasury.

I have very little confidence in US voters. A lot of them are complete dopes. I think Dems will probably win the WH in 2028. But the dumbasses that gave us Trump are not going anywhere. There is a very strong chance that we will wind up with another Trump-like president in the coming years. Canada and Europe can't place their national security and economic well-being in the hands of the least informed voters in Wisconsin every four years. They need to seek out stable and trustworthy partners.

Barbara Baldwin's avatar

I gave 10 years of my career to the US government (the central bank) and remain proud of my service and all the many things I learned and witnessed along the way. I was lead analyst in the first ever debanking case (ING returned their bank license in favor of their insurance business; of course now the rules have all changed because I’m old. πŸ˜†πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ), the fall of Glass Steagall, the rise of interstate banking and universal banking, the terrible legacy of the Lehman failure and the rise of the TBTF gang. Although the US banking sector needed to modernize (Illinois was a unit banking state when I started, meaning a bank could only have 2 branches and they had to be within 10 miles of HO). Can you imagine that today? Of course, I don’t think that ALL the changes have necessarily been for the better.

As a Canadian couple travelling around to many countries other than USA we find that people often ask us β€œwhere in the US are you from?”. We usually suggest they ask where in America we’re from, don’t just assume we are US citizens.

USA citizens call themselves Americans but an American could be Canadian, Mexican, Guatemalan, or from any country in Central or even South America.

Why don't you say you're Canadian? I definitely would.

Kcwookie's avatar

Hell, I’m a United States citizen, and if I was outside of the country and didn’t have to show my passport immediately I’d probably claim I was Canadian too.

For many people, they can't determine the difference between the accents of the USA and Canada. It's simply that.

Dear Mr. Carney,

What a wonderful job you’ve done for Canada! I was wondering, if you had a little spare time, could you make the US your 11th Province? Or maybe a territory or something. The US seems to be going through some things right now.

Thanks,

The US

Canada still loves you Wendy.

Hey! There’s only a great lake between Canada & IL. Annex us, please! It would be great to have an intelligent leader

RuleofLawRules's avatar

Michigan first, as you will want to be contiguous, right?

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

Absolutely! I love MI, so we need to have it

Mr. Carney is not only revered by united Canadians, he is honored by many American fans. Thank you for this explanatory nuts and bolts article of the state we are in.

This is going to cost the U.S. big time. Until we get the broligarhs and T out, the U.S. is toast.

An excellent article providing heartening news of how a great nation is showing the way, acting with the maturity and intelligence so lacking in the failing state that is its southern neighbour. It has given me a lift to read this article, and learn that there is a model for how a middle power with a coherent commitment to international law and its own independence can avoid being cowered, and as the author here puts it so well, can re-fashion itself to align in a logical partnership with Europe. Is my homeland of Australia paying attention? We Australians have been only an equivocal success in learning from Canada’s example of national maturity and independent vision .

O Canada - the world is watching you with complete admiration. You and the Europeans are the trustees of our hopes for a return to better days..

Great article. I hope Canada and Europe sell off their US bonds x we need this President gone. All help welcome

We won’t know how bad our economy is for a while. Fake numbers from this administration.

I think the boarder towns can attest to cooling off between the two nations, along with Vegas, Kentucky, California and especially Florida. International travel to U.S. is evaporating. It isn't tariffs, it isn't the exchange rate, it's the disrespect your President has for our and other nations sovereignty. He really is clueless when it comes to geopolitics.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

He’s pretty clueless about everything

He owes Putin his life. When he does β€œstupid” stuff, he’s doing what he is told

I'd rather not be bankrupted in my old age. So, please don't sell them off. You may use the threat as a cudgel, though....

@jjeffpurdon...Sooooo, put the criminal in PRISON and that way he's gone ! And he can actually die in prison, just like his best , buddy, epstein did!!! No, presidential funeral necessary.

So much for the "business man", the one that thinks he is the best in the game of leverage and of the "art of the deal".

What Canada has done will hurt US workers but I will still congratulate them and wish them well for screwing with trumps ego. It couldn't happen to a better man.

Excellent article! Very little is reported on what other countries are doing to combat the mental illness coming out of Washington! I want all these nations to understand that the majority of the people in the United States are fighting back- we will not let the our country go down in this rabbit hole of submission and subservience to this dictator!

Trump always gets outplayed; he’s really not smart enough to be in the same circle as these other world leaders. This whole persona as the great deal maker is a joke, just part of the scam he’s pulling at the time and the β€œadoration” of his fellow criminals

Stevew's avatar

Trump is not a businessman. He's a moron playing Godfather. He couldn't get a real job.

Stan Duffner's avatar

trumpy may solve the immigration problem by making us a shit hole country that nobody will want to come to.

When will his corrupt billionaire cabinet realize he will be bankrupting them along with the rest of the country

BJ Zamora's avatar

Let us all never forget that Trump is no businessman. He has only been a scammer and grifter his entire life. He has no chance against an opponent with Carney’s credentials and experience.
