Donald Trump and his MAGA movement have spent nearly two years treating the government like a private crime syndicate, operating under the delusion that voters would never hold them accountable.
That fantasy expires in less than three weeks.
Political analyst and former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt delivered a blistering political obituary for the GOP during an October 15, 2026 YouTube interview with journalist Katie Couric.
Speaking just 19 days before the November midterm elections, the veteran operative behind past national Republican campaigns laid out why the ruling party faces total electoral destruction.
Two years of comprehensive polling data, opinion markets, and betting markets form the backbone of Schmidt’s forecast. He accurately predicted earlier this year that the president’s approval rating would sink to 30 percent by spring, where it remains stuck near a hard floor of 26 percent.
Democrats are now poised to capture the House of Representatives, the Senate, a majority of governorships, and a majority of state legislatures.
Schmidt described the coming wave as “a seismic result,” telling Couric that “this election is going to be the singularly biggest repudiation that either of us have witnessed in our professional adult lives of covering and being involved in politics.”

Defying the Magic Switch and Riding the Lifeboat
Record voter turnout will drive this rebuke, fueled by a coalition of Democrats, independents, and disaffected Republicans. Anxious liberals often worry about election interference, yet Schmidt dismissed the president’s threats to block voting as pure bluster.
He mocked the idea that the White House controls the ballot box, noting that “Trump saying that he can stop anyone from voting is really not different from him threatening to turn the sun off with his magic switch behind his Coca-Cola switch in the Oval Office.”
Election night results will arrive faster than Trump can react, leaving him to “hate-tweet throughout that night into the morning.”
Gerrymandering will not rescue Republican lawmakers either. Aggressive redistricting in states like Texas diluted existing GOP majorities to grab extra seats, creating “the old boomerang scenario where they threw one out there, and it’s going to come back and bop them on the head.”
Democratic leaders should not mistake this wave for blind affection. Schmidt joked about Chuck Schumer delivering a Sally Field Oscar speech proclaiming, “You like us, again you like us.” Voters actually view Democrats as “the lifeboat upon the cold, dark sea that nobody wishes to get into but for the sinking ship.”

The Star Wars Cantina Freak Show Crumbles
Betrayal and moral rot define the Republican collapse across traditional conservative strongholds.
Schmidt contrasted today’s GOP extremists with late Kansas Senator Bob Dole, a wounded World War II veteran whose hometown neighbors in Russell funded his first campaign with nickels and dimes in cigar boxes.
Kansas voters are now rejecting Republican Roger Marshall, whom Schmidt slammed as “a cruel man who locked people up on $100 medical bills, abusing his power, playing the role of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.”
Public disgust is sinking corrupt MAGA candidates nationwide. Schmidt celebrated the demise of “this entire Star Wars cantina freak show of depravity,” calling out figures from Kimberly Guilfoyle to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Democrat James Talarico is set to defeat Paxton, an “extraordinary buffoon” caught “running around with international gangsters in Dubai, his mistress in Europe during the summer.”
South Carolina presents another shock following Senator Lindsey Graham’s death. Trump installed Graham’s sister, Doreen, whom Schmidt blasted as a “know-nothing” and “Sarah Palin on a super steroid,” on track to lose to Democrat Annie Andrews.
Democratic victories are also brewing in Ohio, Iowa, Alaska, and Maine, where Troy Jackson leads Susan Collins.

Burning Billions in Monopoly Money
Desperate Republican committees are trying to buy their way out of disaster, spending over half a billion dollars on advertising in the Texas Senate race alone. That sum exceeds what George W. Bush spent on each of his entire national presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2004.
White House intimidation simultaneously dried up corporate PAC money for Democrats, yet the GOP cash blitz has failed. Schmidt emphasized that “none of it will work,” noting that freeing Democrats from corporate donors gives them a green light to investigate billionaire enablers.
Elon Musk exemplifies this panic, dumping $364 million into GOP coffers to shield his government contracts from legal scrutiny. Schmidt called the sum “Monopoly money to him,” adding that Musk “can spend 364 zillion quadrillion billion and it’s not going to make a difference.”
An empowered Congress must form a joint select committee to investigate Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency alongside tech moguls Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Ellison.
Recalling Musk’s three “Nazi salutes” at the last inauguration, Schmidt warned that “likely criminal conduct as a special government employee is not immunized by being worth a trillion dollars.”
Schmidt also urged the next Democratic president to revoke Musk’s security clearances on hour one. Such a move would effectively bar Musk from leadership roles in his own companies on government contracts.

Subpoenas, Inherent Contempt, and Tearing Down the Gilded Rot
Voters are giving Congress a mandate of steel, not bipartisan compromise. Schmidt stressed that the mission is “not to work with MAGA, it’s not to get stuff done, it’s to make things stop, and to set in motion the events that will make certain [a movement like MAGA will] never, ever, ever happen again, at least for another 250 years.”
Continuing, Schmidt explained that accountability awaits the “few hundred people at the most” inside the regime who “went completely off the fucking rails.”
Congressional subpoenas will expose secret funders of Trump’s ballroom, while officials like Kristi Noem, Pam Bondi, and Corey Lewandowski will face oversight for private prison abuses, southern Caribbean killings, and the probable war crime of a U.S. submarine sinking an unarmed Iranian frigate.
Schmidt told Couric lawmakers should immediately use inherent contempt authority to jail Apollo Global Management co-founder Leon Black for defying subpoenas regarding the $158 million he paid child sex predator Jeffrey Epstein.
Schmidt argued that the committee taking a strict stance allows Congress to declare, “we can lock you up in the Capitol building constitutionally because we fucking can.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, “the greatest whack-job in the history of the country ever associated with the American military,” must be ousted under threat of impeachment.
Democrats must also seize Trump’s Qatari jet, demolish his victory arch, and rip “all the gold-gilt crap off the walls.”

The Collapsing White Dwarf Star and the Tiger’s Belly
Crushing defeat in November will not moderate the Republican Party. Schmidt compared the shrinking GOP to a collapsing white dwarf star that grows heavier, denser, and more extreme as it contracts.
He predicted that House Speaker Mike Johnson will be ousted, leaving Jim Jordan as the likely minority leader of a crazier caucus unleashing “cries of victimization and grievance that you could hear to Jupiter and back.”
Ambitious 2028 Republican contenders face a lose-lose trap. Terrified of Trump’s wrath, hopefuls must delay their campaigns and pretend he can run for a third term.
Sycophants around the president act like “the Führer’s generals in the waning days,” insisting the cure for every failure is “more Trump, which is like pointing the nose down further with the afterburners on.”
John F. Kennedy once warned of foolish men who try to ride a tiger only to wind up inside. Republicans ignored Lindsey Graham’s prophecy that nominating Trump would destroy their party, and Schmidt concluded that “now their movement’s going to be electorally obliterated.”

“Will you accept a Presidential Pardon for your conduct while in office? Have you already been offered one?”
