Democracy's Kill Switch: How It Works and How We Save It
The Step-by-Step Plan to End Democracy—And How We Fight Back
Democracy doesn’t die in a coup or blaze of revolution. It erodes—piece by piece, institution by institution—until the system that once safeguarded freedoms becomes unrecognizable.
We’ve seen this playbook before, in nations like Hungary, Russia, and Turkey. Now, we’re watching it unfold in the United States.
Donald Trump’s second term is accelerating the systematic dismantling of American democracy, and without swift, coordinated action, the damage may become irreversible.
This isn’t hyperbole. As U.S. Senator Chris Murphy recently warned, “We are watching democracy disappear in real time.”
The path to authoritarianism follows a chillingly familiar script. Autocrats don’t need tanks in the streets. They rely on a more subtle but equally dangerous strategy: undermining accountability, normalizing violence, and silencing dissent.
This is how democracy dies.
Step 1: Legitimize Political Violence
The first step in dismantling democracy is to make violence socially and politically acceptable.
By pardoning January 6 rioters—many of whom were convicted of seditious conspiracy—Trump sent an unmistakable signal: violence is permissible if it furthers his agenda.
When high-ranking members of extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers were pardoned, Trump called them “patriots” who had been “unjustly persecuted.”
This wasn’t just rhetoric—it was a green light for future violence.
Since those pardons, political violence has escalated. Armed protests outside state capitols have become frequent. Election workers, journalists, and activists report daily threats.
Freedom House’s latest annual report warned that fear of retaliation silences Americans who would otherwise speak out.
This normalization of violence creates a dangerous feedback loop. Grassroots intimidation rises, opposition voices fall silent, and public trust in peaceful political processes erodes.
As Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt argue in How Democracies Die, once violence becomes a political norm, democracy collapses under the weight of fear and suppression.
Step 2: Control the Media
A free press is the cornerstone of democracy. That’s why autocrats target it early.
Instead of outright banning the press, modern authoritarians use subtler tactics: economic pressure, exclusion from access, and the promotion of propaganda. Trump’s administration exemplifies this strategy.
In April, longstanding wire services like Reuters and Bloomberg were removed from permanent membership in the White House press pool, replaced by pro-Trump outlets.
Journalists critical of the administration face harassment, while loyalists are rewarded with exclusive access.
The administration has also pressured major outlets behind the scenes. CNN reportedly faced threats of lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny unless it aired favorable programming about the Trump family.
The Washington Post has softened its editorial stance, fearing retaliation against its corporate ownership.
Meanwhile, public broadcasting networks like Voice of America have been gutted, leaving a vacuum for foreign propaganda to fill.
The result? The American public is increasingly inundated with misinformation, while independent journalism struggles to survive.
Step 3: Undermine the Legal System
The rule of law is another pillar of democracy—and another target for autocrats.
Since Trump’s return to power, his administration has demanded loyalty from judges, pressured law firms, and weaponized the legal system to serve its agenda.
Major law firms have been coerced into providing billions of dollars in pro bono services for administration-aligned causes, from trade negotiations to defending Trump allies.
Judges who rule against the administration face public criticism and career-damaging attacks
.These efforts have created a chilling effect throughout the legal field. Independent lawyers fear retaliation, while younger attorneys leave the profession in protest.
As the legal system becomes increasingly politicized, democracy’s ability to hold power accountable crumbles.
Step 4: Target Universities
Universities have long been incubators of dissent, knowledge, and progress. That’s why autocrats see them as a threat.
The Trump administration has weaponized federal funding to bring universities to heel. In early 2025, Columbia University lost $400 million in federal grants after the administration accused it of fostering “antisemitism.”
The university regained its funding only after agreeing to administration demands, including ideological oversight of hiring and curriculum.
Other universities are watching and falling in line. Smaller institutions, more dependent on federal funding, have complied with similar demands preemptively, stifling academic freedom and silencing dissent.
But the consequences extend beyond ideology. Federal funding cuts have halted critical research projects, from life-saving medical studies to climate science.
The attack on universities isn’t just about controlling ideas—it’s about undermining any institution that challenges authoritarian power.
Step 5: Coerce the Private Sector
Autocrats also target businesses, forcing them to choose between loyalty and survival.
Trump’s administration has weaponized tariffs and federal contracts to punish dissenters and reward loyalists.
Companies critical of administration policies face financial strain, while those that toe the line receive exemptions and lucrative deals.
For example, renewable energy companies have been hit with crippling tariffs, while fossil fuel companies aligned with the administration thrive.
Federal contracts now require companies to pledge allegiance to “pro-American” values—a vague standard that effectively silences opposition.
This economic coercion creates a private sector too fearful to stand up for democratic principles. Without corporate resistance, authoritarian regimes consolidate power even further.
Step 6: Cut Off Opposition Funding
Finally, autocrats starve the opposition of resources.
The Trump administration has targeted progressive nonprofits, donor networks, and grassroots platforms like ActBlue.
Under the guise of IRS audits and FEC investigations, these organizations have been tied up in legal battles, draining their resources and disrupting their operations.
Grassroots movements, which rely heavily on platforms like ActBlue, are particularly vulnerable. Without reliable funding, many have scaled back or shut down entirely.
The result is a weakened opposition that is unable to mobilize or hold the administration accountable.
How We Fight Back
The blueprint for destroying democracy is clear, but so is the path to saving it. History offers three key lessons:
Institutional Solidarity: Institutions must stand together. Universities, media organizations, businesses, and nonprofits must form coalitions to resist authoritarian overreach.
Collective action makes it harder for autocrats to isolate and destroy individual targets.Mass Mobilization: Public protests remain one of the most powerful tools of resistance. The April 12th “Defend Democracy” rallies brought millions into the streets, proving that Americans are ready to fight for their freedoms.
But sustained, strategic mobilization is needed.Bold Leadership: Defending democracy requires courage. Governors, CEOs, and community leaders must be willing to take risks, even in the face of retaliation.
Bold leadership inspires citizens to act and builds momentum for change.
The Choice Is Ours
Democracy doesn’t defend itself. It requires vigilance, courage, and action from all of us.
The attacks on America’s democratic institutions are not isolated incidents—they are part of a coordinated effort to consolidate power and silence dissent. Each day we wait to act, the damage deepens.
But it’s not too late. We still have independent courts, courageous journalists, and millions of Americans committed to democratic values. The question is whether we will rise to meet this moment.
The choice is ours: Will we watch democracy die, or will we fight to save it?
