Anyone who knows anything about training hunting dogs will tell you that if you take a 14 month old inexperienced puppy (dogs don’t completely mature until between two and three years) out hunting, even if they are completely trained, requires considerable patience, and is probably going to turn into an impromptu training session, as the pup figures out the whole hunting thing. To expect a newly, incompletely trained dog to perform like an experienced, finished field trial contender is not only unrealistic and ignorant, but incredibly foolish…. And really, really stupid.
I'm not a trainer, but I do know dogs. Mine is dog reactive; we've been training for 12 years. My daughter has a Mal (unplanned adoption); he's always training. He's 4 now, and mostly adult.
I don't think she ever trained that poor puppy at all. Just expected her to magically become perfect. There is a special circle in hell reserved for people who abuse those weaker than they. There are lots of lava flows and knives.
So sad for your daughter’s dog. As you know, socialization (with other dogs as well as humans)and training (even basic obedience training) are continuous processes that never really end.
But without them you are probably going to end up with a feral, uncontrollable creature that will break your heart.
Why are you sad for my daughter's dog? He's a great dog. The reason he's always training is because Mals are extremely intelligent working dogs. They aren't happy unless they regularly have a job. Whether that job is daily mental and physical stimulation in the form of games or working on skills (which is what Duke thrives on), their breeding produced a dog who loves to work. He also spends time with other dogs (she and her husband have 2 more). He's a very happy fella.

Because they showed up for their jobs, did their jobs and went home at the end of the day. I knew about Janet Napolitano, as she was governor of my state. But other DHS Secretaries? Had to look them up. Turns out that when you just do the job you were hired for, you probably won't get news coverage or South Park level trolling. Maybe give up the cosplay and scrape off the inch-thick layer of makeup; you're in your 50s.
