Donald Trump and House Speaker “MAGA Mike” Johnson have spent months projecting absolute dominance, yet several GOP lawmakers are already waving the white flag behind closed doors.
Top congressional Republicans have privately conceded that holding the U.S. House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections is nearly impossible.
Republican power brokers are abandoning their dreams of unchecked rule to focus on damage control as voters reject their extreme agenda.
Five senior GOP lawmakers spoke anonymously to POLITICO this week and admitted the lower chamber has almost completely slipped out of their grasp.
One senior House Republican confessed that the party’s sole remaining objective is to “save as many Republican seats as we can,” while bluntly adding that Trump is not helping their survival efforts.
Another Republican lawmaker predicted Democrats will pick up roughly 10 seats, more than enough to hand the gavel back to the opposition.
Retiring Nebraska Representative Don Bacon refused to hide behind anonymity and placed the blame squarely on the Oval Office. “I’ve talked to some who are making these decisions: The biggest problem is the president’s polling numbers and unfavorables,” Bacon explained.
Even in newly redistricted red states like Florida and Texas, Republican candidates are reportedly “hanging on with their fingernails.”

Follow the Money as the Ship Sinks
Campaign cash tells the real story of this political collapse. Republican groups have already retreated from multiple contested districts that Trump won just two years ago.
The Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), the premier super PAC for House Republicans, recently canceled television advertising for vulnerable GOP incumbents like Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, along with abandoning Representative Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey and Bacon’s Omaha-based seat in Nebraska.
Desperate to salvage something from the wreckage, GOP operatives are shifting their focus toward protecting their fragile Senate majority.
The Senate Leadership Fund quickly claimed the canceled House ad time in the Midwest to prop up Senator Pete Ricketts in Nebraska and Senate candidate Ashley Hinson in Iowa.
Republican strategists are now spending heavily just to defend Senate seats in once-reliable MAGA strongholds like Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas, while Trump was forced to fly to Alaska this week to rescue embattled GOP Senator Dan Sullivan.
“These are not the moves of a party that’s going to keep the House,” a third Republican lawmaker observed.

Gaslighting the Base While Cutting Bait
Publicly, MAGA leaders are offering pure delusion to mask their tactical retreat. Trump claimed on Tuesday that “the level of enthusiasm for the Republican Party is way up” because he is holding rallies.
White House spokeswoman Liz Huston insisted the president remains “committed to maintaining Republican majorities in both the House and Senate”. Speaker Mike Johnson went even further during a Texas campaign stop, flatly declaring to voters that “the polling is wrong”.
National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Mike Marinella similarly boasted that the party possesses “the financial firepower and ground game needed to win,” while CLF President Chris Winkelman claimed they are merely moving money to “keep the pressure on the most vulnerable Democrats and preserve a path to 218 seats”.
Their actions expose the lie. Pulling millions of dollars from battleground districts proves that GOP leadership knows Trump’s toxic agenda has poisoned their brand with the American public. They are lying to their grassroots donors while quietly cutting off their own frontline candidates.

A Lose-Lose Reckoning for the GOP
Former Florida Republican Representative Carlos Curbelo, who lost his swing seat during the 2018 midterm wave, noted that his former colleagues are clear-eyed about the impending disaster.
“The environment is about as tough as one could expect,” Curbelo said. “There is no one who has privately stated that they believe Republicans can hold the House, not in recent weeks, anyway”.
This mass abandonment creates a fatal trap for the MAGA movement. Cutting off vulnerable House candidates guarantees a Democratic majority that will immediately gain subpoena power, legislative oversight, and the ability to block Trump’s extremist policies at every turn.
Pouring every remaining dollar into red-state Senate races also drains resources with no guarantee of holding the upper chamber, especially with Trump dragging down the entire ticket.
The self-proclaimed political masterminds have backed themselves into a corner, and the voters are ready to deliver the final verdict.

About time, don't you think? Having the government by and for the people by turning that government leadership, giving Congress the ability to ".....immediately gain subpoena power, legislative oversight, and the ability to block Trump’s extremist policies." About time the adults in the room speak out.
