In 2024, Colorado embarked on an ambitious journey to restore a key species long absent from its rugged high-alpine regions: the North American wolverine. 

Once driven out by aggressive predator hunting and habitat loss, wolverines were on the brink of disappearing from the state entirely. 

In November 2023, after more than two decades of litigation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designated wolverines a threatened species in the lower 48 states under the Endangered Species Act.

Thanks to Senate Bill 24-171 (SB 24-171), signed into law by Colorado’s Democratic Governor Jared Polis in May 2024, the state has initiated a reintroduction plan representing a monumental step forward in environmental stewardship.
