Donald Trump treats the American judicial system like a personal weapon designed to bully critics into silence. That authoritarian playbook just collided with a foreign broadcaster that refuses to kneel.
Trump slapped the BBC with a ludicrous $10 billion defamation lawsuit in a Florida federal court, expecting a quick apology and a massive settlement check. The network instead called his bluff, turning his vanity lawsuit into a full-scale legal reckoning over his role in the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
Court filings show Trump’s legal offensive is imploding under the weight of its own evidence.
Trump originally sued the British network over a 2024 documentary that spliced clips of his January 6 speech, claiming the broadcast maliciously implied he incited the violent attack on Congress.
British attorneys recently subpoenaed former Special Counsel Jack Smith to testify about the president’s intent during the riot, even as the network urged U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett to sanction Trump after he brazenly skipped a scheduled October 16 deposition.
Opening the Door for Jack Smith
This self-inflicted disaster exposes the core hypocrisy of the MAGA movement’s legal strategy. Trump loves posing as a fearless strongman who welcomes any fight, yet his lawsuit reflects catastrophic legal incompetence.
Defamation law requires the plaintiff to prove that an accusation is false. Trump’s inept lawyers somehow forgot that suing the BBC over Jan. 6 coverage places the legal burden on Trump to prove under oath that “he did not foment or incite the January 6 Capitol riot,” blowing the doors wide open for discovery.
British attorneys seized that opening and laid the groundwork for a subpoena targeting former Special Counsel Jack Smith, the prosecutor who spent years investigating Trump’s election interference crimes.
Smith offered no resistance and stands ready to testify under oath.
Scrambling to block him ahead of the formal Monday docket entries, panicked Trump lawyers rushed to file an objection on Friday.
They ludicrously argued that "Smith lacks any personal knowledge regarding the issues in this matter" while dismissing his federal investigation as mere "secondhand knowledge.”
BBC attorneys shredded that laughable excuse in their Monday filing, writing, "No one forced Plaintiff to file this lawsuit and to dispute that his speech on January 6 incited the violence that followed at the Capitol.
🚨 "We cannot let authoritarian bullies hide behind bad-faith lawsuits." Hit that subscribe button with the joyful energy of Jack Smith filing a brand-new subpoena!
Campaign Rallies Disguised as National Security
Trump’s buffoonish legal team compounded their Jack Smith nightmare by inventing an easily disprovable excuse to keep their client out of the witness chair.
His attorneys told the court the president had to skip his mandatory October 16 deposition because of urgent “matters of national importance,” claiming he had “no availability whatsoever for a deposition” before discovery closes in December.
Lying to a federal judge requires a special breed of legal malpractice when your client spends his entire life in front of television cameras.
BBC lawyers immediately presented the Florida court with undeniable proof of Trump’s actual schedule. Those supposed “matters of national importance” consisted of delivering a partisan campaign speech in Georgia and hosting a wealthy donor fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago club.
Judge Lett, who already ordered Trump to surrender closely guarded financial records from his revocable trust, warned the president that he faces severe sanctions for evading court rules.
Trump Always Chickens Out
Rick Smith’s infamous adage, #ETTD (Everything Trump Touches Dies), applies with brutal precision here. Trump took a petty grievance over a British documentary edit and turned it into a subpoena factory that threatens his finances and hands Jack Smith a new microphone.
Because British taxpayers fund the BBC, the network has zero reason to cave to political extortion.
One inevitable outcome awaits this imploding legal stunt, captured by another viral meme: TACO, or Trump Always Chickens Out.
Trump now faces a lose-lose scenario. Sitting for a sworn deposition or handing over full discovery traps a habitual liar in a perjury cage alongside Jack Smith’s evidence, while defying Judge Lett invites humiliating sanctions and a default judgment.
History shows Trump drops lawsuits to avoid giving sworn testimony. Expect him to invent a weak excuse, declare imaginary victory online, and quietly fold his tent.

Geez, how many times will he fold up his tent to avoid scrutiny! 🧐
Never more proud to be British. I love the BBC.
