California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking a page straight out of Donald Trump’s playbook—messy all-caps posts, snarky nicknames, meme-like theatrics—to mock Trump and push back on redistricting tactics advancing Republican power.
On social media, Newsom’s press team has unleashed a flurry of stylized posts on X, using full uppercase, over-the-top punctuation, and jabs aimed at Trump’s signature rhetoric. One post declared:
“DONALD TRUMP, THE LOWEST POLLING PRESIDENT IN RECENT HISTORY, THIS IS YOUR SECOND-TO-LAST WARNING!!! … STAND DOWN NOW OR CALIFORNIA WILL COUNTER-STRIKE (LEGALLY!) TO DESTROY YOUR ILLEGAL CROOKED MAPS IN RED STATES.”
In another viral zinger, he called Trump “Donald ‘Taco’ Trump”—a dig at the former president’s nickname “Trump Always Chickens Out”—while promising “more ‘beautiful maps’” to counter GOP redistricting in Texas.
The real stakes? Newsom is ready to override California’s independent redistricting commission through a special voter referendum in November—aimed at creating five Democratic-leaning congressional districts. It’s a direct countermeasure to aggressive GOP mapping efforts.
