Which brings me to Marco Rubio, a former member of his party’s internationalist wing and defender of human rights who may have surrendered not only his cards but his principles in becoming Mr Trump’s secretary of state. He has looked like a hostage while perched silently on the couch in the Oval Office during Mr Trump’s meetings with the king of Jordan and Mr Zelensky; “Saturday Night Live” compared his appearance in that second session to the classic image of an embarrassed Homer Simpson retreating backward into a hedge. After saying in his speech that his administration would be “reclaiming the Panama Canal”, Mr Trump said, “Now we have Marco Rubio in charge.” He looked down at Mr Rubio and wished him luck, adding with a smirk and a chuckle, “Now we know who to blame if anything goes wrong.” Almost no one laughed at that one. Even Republicans seemed uncertain if it was a joke or a threat.
