Mehdi Hasan’s Masterclass in Debate

If you ever wondered what it would be like to debate 20 far-right conservatives at once, Mehdi Hasan has you covered—and then some. In the latest episode of Jubilee’s “Surrounded” series, Mehdi found himself as the lone progressive voice in a room that quickly turned into a live-action Twitter thread from 4chan.
Let’s be clear: “far-right” doesn’t even begin to cover it. Within minutes, the mask slipped. One participant proudly declared, “The conservatives are liberal to me… that’s how far to the right I am.” Another, when pressed, just came out and said it: “I think you can say I’m a fascist.” (Spoiler: he was right. He also refused to condemn the Nazi Holocaust, but did find time to praise General Franco as “so super cool.”)
It gets better (or worse, depending on your faith in humanity). At various points, Mehdi was told to “get the hell out” of the US, had his citizenship questioned (“I don’t know how you got that, but fair enough”), and was informed that “white people in the US are the real ‘Native Americans.’” Historical revisionism, but make it white nationalist.
And just in case you thought this was all performative edgelord cosplay, one participant openly admitted, “I don’t care about being called a Nazi,” while another defended the killing of Palestinian children in Gaza because, apparently, “they start brainwashing children at a very young age.”
Mehdi, for his part, kept his composure and his snark: “I’m amazed that Jubilee found some of you guys. How do they find you?” he quipped, after yet another participant started quoting Nazi theoretician Carl Schmitt.

Welcome to the new normal, where “debate” means arguing with people who think democracy is optional and fascism is just another political flavor.
