Donald Trump is actively holding the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts hostage to satisfy his fragile ego.
The diapered don made his extortion plot clear on September 15 when he posted that the board agreed “to close the Building for Safety reasons, and so that it can begin the process of Reconstruction.”
Trump demanded his name go on the historic memorial or he will allow it to rot. He warned that renovation “cannot begin until such time as the D.C. Circuit rules on the Board’s approved name.”
He insisted that if the court rules against him, “the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Center will not take place.”
This is classic authoritarian blackmail. Trump wants the public to believe he saved the venue by claiming “17 Million Dollars, raised by President Trump, has been put into The Kennedy Center account to keep it afloat.”
Now, he is using federal resources to punish anyone standing in his way - to the extent of tearing the center down.
Sworn Witness Testimony Exposes Physical Destruction
Bridget Kennedy-Bailey, a staff member for the legal team of Representative Joyce Beatty, who is suing Trump to stop this exact extortion, exposed the reality in a sworn court declaration filed on September 16, 2026.
Kennedy-Bailey arrived at the Center and found that the automatic sliding doors “did not open for me because it appeared to be locked”. A security officer told her, “No, we’re closed.”
“I saw the forklift run into and hit the pillars on the building several times.”
Security specialist Shateik Jones confirmed the building was closed and “stated that he was told to keep the doors locked.” Jones confirmed to Kennedy-Bailey that “the order came from ‘higher-ups.’”
Soon after, workers installed heavy barricades. Kennedy-Bailey observed “black metal gates had been placed in front of the building” and that they “blocked all the staircases leading to the building.”
The situation turned destructive within minutes. Kennedy-Bailey watched a forklift carrying fencing drive toward the north side of the complex.
She testified under penalty of perjury: “I saw the forklift run into and hit the pillars on the building several times.”
The East Wing Playbook Repeats Itself
Trump is pulling straight from his authoritarian playbook. We saw this exact lawlessness when he pushed through unauthorized destruction of the White House East Wing without legal authority.
Now, his loyalists are manufacturing a fake safety emergency to justify shuttering a national monument that refused his branding.
Workers on the scene could barely keep their cover story straight. A security guard named Patricia Haynes claimed: “The gates are for ‘public safety’ because they are doing construction inside the building.”
A public relations staffer told Kennedy-Bailey “The building is closed for these repairs, and that staff are not allowed in without a hard hat.” When asked if any actual work was happening, he could only guess that it “seems like it.”
Kennedy-Bailey noted that “workers were waiting for more gates to arrive to close [the perimeter]” while “forklifts bringing more gates to the front of the building” erected construction-style barriers.
Trump is running a crude retaliatory operation designed to vandalize public property out of spite.
